5.3 idle tick

I recently purchased a 2017 1500 LS 5.3. Absolutely love it. Mine is dead quiet at idle, not the slightest bit of tick or anything. I have to buddies that have 2014-2015s, and they both tick at idle very loudly, and one claims it has done it since day 1.

What has changed in the latest models? Just curious.

Refinements to the DI system. My 2016 has some weird idle ticks.

It's crazy to me that DI can make that kind of noise. Sounds like lifters to me

The high pressure fuel pump is driven off the camshaft. Let's hope these are built better than VW DI engines of 10 years ago. The cam lobe that drove the pump was made of softer metal than the follower and had a nice channel ground down into it when I had it replaced under recall.

Crazy... wonder if that means our 5.3s need some zinc...

I had the same problem.

This is what my dealership found.

Mine will surge rhythmically like a big cammed engine at idle when the engine temp is around 185. Once it reaches operating temp its quits. It's a 2016 6.2l. My 15 was 5.3l and never did that, but it did tick a lot.
