Rust Proof coating

Good morning fellas,

My truck was in an accident while parked and destroyed my front side of my truck by a drunk driver. My truck has been in the shop for over a month. Prior to giving the keys and dropping off the truck, I explained to the adjuster and showed the area where the vehicle scrape off the waxing coating on the bare metal of the frame. I also explained that it comes like that from factory and that I would like a rust proof coating on the frame. The guy looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. I got a call yesterday and he said that the waxing coating doesn't come from factory and that they are not able to do it. I've searched through google on where it says that GM sprayed their frame with this wax coating and no luck. Can anybody show me where it says that it comes like this from factory so I can show these people. Thank you

Im not sure what the coating is, but tell him to stop by any gm dealership in the world and look under any truck. Guy must be an idiot.

Typical insurance claim. They will spend more money trying to avoid paying than what the cost of the repair is! There are some threads in the k2xx 1500 section where guys were having issues with the coating peeling off. GM was recoating the frames under warranty so the coating must be available as a repair item. Sorry I don't know the name of the stuff.

Here's the facts...

A division of Magna makes the frames for GM. Gm spec for frame protection is a wax coating which Magna applies via dipping the frame in a large wax bath. While the frame steel is Galvanized, in my experience it only helps so much. GM will state that this is how truck frames have been protected for the last century, and they're not necessarily wrong. I personally believe a layer of paint (preferably e-coat) underneath the wax would be the ultimate in protection for our professional grade trucks.

The good news...here is a link to the gm spec aftermarket wax spray. This is used for frame repair and touch-ups.

https://www.daubertchemical.com/store/product-list/corrosion-prevention/nox-rust-x-121b

Sorry for the cold link, I'm on mobile.

The bad news...the dealerships no longer sell this product. Daubert NOX Rust 121b is a one for one match to the factory coating. I ordered a case of it off the above link however and have been using it to touch up the never ending rock damage to the wax coating.

Extra tip...after the wax drys I spray Rustoleum Zinc Enriched spray paint. It leaves a nice hardened "shell" over the wax.

Hope this helps man. Do not accept a "repair" missing the reapplication of the frame protection. At the very least have them zeibart it.

Thank you for this information. I won't accept it, I've been patience long enough and since I'm deploying next month, I want my truck to be in perfect condition prior to me leaving. I really appreciate all of the information. I'll keep you guys updated.

Ok did some digging. This looks like something that can be used on bare metal after cleaning off rust. Good idea to just use this?

Since my rust is very light, I've been spraying permatex rust stopper spray, then the day after hitting with the daubert spray, and then the black rust oleum zinc rich spray paint. Luckily i have two vehicls so can afford for my truck to sit around and dry. My frame looks better than when I bought the truck. Sad that I have to do this to a 4 month old truck, but that's a different story for another thread.

Guys make sure to take care of at least the bottom of the frame where the mechanics lift pads contact the frame when hoisting your truck up. This causes the wax to rub off and expose frame metal. For this area I just paint since the wax will just keep coming off

If your rust is extensive your truck may be covered by a TSB. To fix extensive rust you will need to hit it with an abrasive like a wire brush or 3m abrasive pad etc. then spray rust stopper and cover with wax spray (the TSB instructions paraphrased).

Update on my situation, the shop came through and painted the front of the frame with the E waxing coating after I refused to take my vehicle. Thanks a lot of the help here
