Would you buy a new, leftover '16?

There are a few leftover 2016 Sierras/Silverados at local dealerships that are being sold for close to 20% off original sticker price. I'm in a positive equity position in my '15 Silverado (somewhere between $5000-$7000 dollars). So, I could get into a new '16 with nothing out of pocket and walk away with a slightly lower payment. The question is, do you think it's wise to buy a new truck that will be 2 years old in just a few months once the '18s roll onto the lots?

Most every vehicle I bought, I bought that way. 20 percent off a 16 isn't enough thou. With truck month just about every month their giving 20 percent off 17s. The last vehicle is bought I got that plus 0 per cent too and that was a half year model. Work them, they'll do better.

The only maybe for me is the warranty. The '16 warranty will be deeper into the 3 year / 36K timeframe. You might be able to use that as a lever when working the overall number (the '16 price is probably pretty firm).

If I needed a new truck for work or had a reason like needing a bigger bed/cab/more power than the '16 is a no brainer. If I wanted something just for the sake of being new, i'd wait and be happy with the money spent.

That's how I got my '16 Silverado regular cab. The dealer where I got it from wanted to unload it to make room for more '17 Silverado regular cabs. I got mine 20% off of MSRP of 40k. They had two '17 regular cabs for full MSRP of around 42k. I didn't care that it was going to be a year old already but I did save around 8k so I was happy.

What? It's a brand new truck. Warranty starts from day of purchase, not model year of the truck.

Leftover inventory is the way to go for best deals. I got my 2014 49K MSRP on the road for 35K. Felt like I stole it.

Warranties do not start till truck is noted sold (RDR) to the manufacturer unless it was a demo or some other reason. It should be good unless their are other factors we are unaware of.

It's possible it was a demo, or was marked somehow as in service.

Say what??? The warranty on a new truck does not start until the vehicle is sold to the 1st owner and is started in the GMVIS system at the dealer.

Better deals to be had. They are offering 20% off on 2017s in some place. If you find a 2016 you like, low ball them and see if they bite.

I'd buy a leftover all day as long as the price reflects it's a leftover. I've bought several and the deals were always great.

Yeah haha. My regular cab came pretty much loaded, only thing it doesn't have is 4x4 and the front and rear sensors.

try to talk the dealer down on the price as much as possible just because of that factor... try to make them eat the depreciation on it. it all depends on the purchase price to determine whether 2016 is worth while or not... so dont get all caught up in their hype about some low monthly payment. first thing is to just talk them down on the actual purchase price of the vehicle to as low as possible. and tell them, the minute you drive off this lot, this 2016 is looking at 2 years worth of depreciation already, plus the fact that this vehicle has been just sitting around getting rained on and baking in the sun....So in another words, its new but not that new....as compared to a 2017 & 2018 coming up.....and really compare its value with those newer years and see what you are getting. Because if they do not sell it, they are looking at only getting about 45 to 50% of the window sticker price when they have to "off" it to a wholesale lease company. So calculate at about 60% to 65% of the window sticker price as your approximate purchase price or less. Make that your target.

and show your interest and see if you can prolong that purchase for a few more weeks. Cuz the longer it sits there the lower the price they will be willing to let it go for, before they have to give it up for about 50% of sticker prtice.
