Post-Shutdown Radio Operation

So on my Silverado, when I shut the truck off the radio continues to work when the key is removed. Usually when I stop the truck it's because I'm pulled over in a parking lot to write up some paperwork and I need to focus. It's only a small annoyance but every time I shut the truck off I keep thinking the radio will shut off too. So I either have to crack the door or press the mute button every time.

 

Again, not a big deal.

 

But I'm curious if there is a way to make the truck actually SHUT OFF completely when I shut the truck off. It appears to go into what I would call accessory mode when I remove the key allowing use of the radio and window operation. There's no use powering accessories needlessly when I intend to quite literally shut it off. I know it is specifically designed this way as a feature.... but I just want to know if I can turn it off. Doesn't seem to be an option for that in the touch-screen settings menu.

 

I'm more of the old school of where if I want to crack a window, I'll turn the key to the ACC position long enough to lower it and then save the battery and shut it off.

It's working as it should. You can also get in the truck, not put the key in, and hit the power button on the radio and it should come on.

 

I am not aware of any settings to turn this off however. Knowing the guys on this forum, someone will probably chime in with some method they've rigged up though

No you can't turn if off, it called Retained Access Power or RAP. Everything will shut off as soon as you open the door. It will also shut everything down after about 10 minutes or so.

My understanding is that you can have that delay changed or removed by a competent dealer...I've only heard of it being done in a couple forums, never had it done myself. Might even have been discussed in the upfitters manual?

The RAP won't kill your battery. It only stays on for about 10 minutes.

As a good practice you should be minimizing the radio volume before you shut down anyway. Better for the speakers.

Retained Accessory Power (RAP)

The following vehicle accessories can be used for up to 10 minutes after the engine is turned off:

• Audio System

• Power Windows

• OnStar® System (if equipped)

• Sunroof (if equipped)

These features work when the key is in ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY. Once the key is turned from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, the windows and sunroof continue to work up to 10 minutes until any door is opened. The radio continues to work for up to 10 minutes or until the driver door is opened.

This must be your first GM vehicle. They have had RAP in most of their cars since the mid 90s.
