First post here but long time lurker! Ok once upon a time i had a 2004 gmc sierra 1500 and i loved the truck and put well over 200k trouble free miles on it but needed something new so i could travel the country for work. Bought a brand new 2013 ram 1500 and hated it, i guess partly due to the terrible trans in it and the poor quality control. Traded it at 30k miles on a 2015 gmc sierra 1500 slt 4x4 with the 5.3 and 6 speed. I loved that truck just like my 04. It was a great truck and i loved everything about it except the fact i didnt swing the 6.2. 2 years later i got rear ended and the truck was totaled due to bent frame. Got my money from the insurance and started shopping again. I wanted gmc or chevy but at the time i guess i thought a diesel would be cool to have but it was january of 2017 and the new duramax was out and the price was high, so i looked elsewhere for a 3/4 ton diesel and found another dodge. Fast foward again to today and 6.5k miles later on the 2017 ram 2500, im sick with my purchase. The engine fan comes on and sounds like a jet takeing off every 15 seconds or so( dodge claims this is normal but cant give a reason why it happens). Oil changes are $400 a pop with the 2 fuel filters being replaced, rides like a go-cart on a log road. Just overall not satisfied with it. I found a 2017 gmc 1500 slt 4x4 with the 6.2 and 8 speed At my local dealer, and they have a great deal on it and my note wouldnt change compared to now. Ive read that the 8 speeds are nothing but trouble, not something i want to hear at this point lol. What would you guys do? Go ahead and take the chance on the gmc or maybe look toward others like ford, nissan and toyota? Thanks in advance and sorry for any grammer or spelling mistakes.

I have a 2015 2wd with the 6.2 and 56k on the clock. Trans shifts flawlessly. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

I think he was referring to the new 1500 6.2 8 spd.? Anyway on the OP's question yes I would 100% buy a GM truck over a Dodge / Nissan or Toyota. Ford would be a pretty even match for me (been eyeballing one lately) the 8spd troubles are a bit overblown if you actually read the write ups it is 99% complaints about harsh shifting or hunting for the right gear. How many have you actually heard stops working and fell out of the truck? I like my 8 spd and I absolutely love my 6.2 engine, if it decides to give me a little hard downshift every once in a while I am OK with that..........just look at this thing, it is not really a truck it is a dam work of art LOL

Your right. Ive read most of the threads on the problems. I can understand people want there nice new truck to have no issues but in the last 4 years ive bought 5 new vehicals between me and my wife. Ive learned that all of them had there ups and downs but its about chooseing what downs your ok with. For me a hard shift wouldnt bother me as much as a haywire cooling fan. Ive test drove a 2016 6.2 8 speed and its a speed demon compared to my 5.3 6 speed and i liked the way it shifted. So is the harsh shift like a bang into gear or a quick "shift kit" type thing if you know what im talking about?

I have a 2015 GMC CC 6.2 8 speed and love it. I did however, have a hard down shift 2-1 problem early on at about 3k miles. The dealer fixed it and I am now at about 19k miles with no problems -and the 6.2 makes the 8A go like crazy when I stomp on it!

Diesel trucks are great if you haul heavy loads. They are too expensive to buy and maintain for a daily driver, imo. I would not hesitate to recommend any truck engine/transmission combination that GM offers. I currently own a '15 Crew Cab with a 4.3 V6 6 spd. with a 3.42 gear ratio and have never found myself needing or wishing for more power! It is good to be informed about potential issues but appreciate that you will read complaints about most products. I am sure you would be pleased with the 6.2 8 spd. If it has a problem, get it fixed!

WTF are they made of? Gold? Platinum? Man alive!! Sorry I have nothing yet to add, I am still awaiting delivery of my Silverado........

Yea that was the eye opener. I dont tow but i figured the added resell value of the diesel plus the mpg it gets would be great until i found out about mantanance cost lol.

My 16 Denali 5.3 8 speed has been great overall. It will occasionally shift hard on a 1-2 when parking lot driving. Not very often. I'll bet the 10 speed in Ford does the same thing.

People cried about the 6 when it came out too, now its the bees knees...give it time. The 8 will be da bomb when the 10 comes out...

OP, good post. but apples to apples 1500's are not 2500-3500's, Diesel's typically have a higher maintenance cost, nature of the beast since they are now held to EPA & CAFE regulations. 2500-3500 suspensions unloaded can be rough to DD, compared to a 1500.

I enjoy my 6.2/8 although I never drive it, I do notice the 8speed downshifts are a bit firm, mostly during v4 to v8 when coming to a stop, but they have new DTB/TSB's and newer software as of 2 months ago. This best riding truck I have ever owned, the MRC is just awesome, firm when needed, yet soft with 20" wheels. I do use it to tow, yes this Denali tows, but she is a concrete truck.

I say go test drive it! keep in mind 2016's have loads off their sale price plus factory incentives, shop around no need to be in a hurry.

yes i understood that going 2500 would be another beast altogether but i just thought it would be alright after owning it awhile. For me a 1500 suits my need just fine. Doing my math, if i trade for a 48k sierra my note would be the same it is now with no money down. Ive made 3 payments i think so far so thats what i would be out. Just an fyi to others here these sierras hold value very well. I paid 44k for my 2015 and. 2 years later and with 3xxxx miles i got 42k from insurance after it was totaled

I hope that you were not injured in the accident. You would seem to be in the perfect position to buy what you want. I had looked seriously at the 2500HD diesels and drove them a bunch but I do little towing and the rough ride / extra diesel maintenance made my decision easy to buy a new 1500,
