Ok. Got to come clean. Traded.

Some may recall I had a '16 Iridium Metallic that had a few problems.

So I traded for a '16 that so somebody ditched with 7000 miles because the 6 speed transmission had a whine. Yes, it does.

So I traded - SLT Z71 4wd 8sp w 30k miles for a SLT 6sp w 7k miles. It has some options the first didn't have: slide rear window, enhanced driver alert, vented seats. But 2wd.

It has what the build sheet says is the "Z60 HIGH PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION."

Holy cow, this truck drives nice! the trans shifts like every other vehicle I've ever driven and the ride is awesome. We have lots of moderate curve state highways I travel, and this truck hugs the road,

Z60. Besides the sway bar, what exactly is the dif between this and and the Z71? Besides Rancho, skid plate, air filter and decals? This is the bomb.

I'm liking this one, whine be damned.

Z60 has some of the features the z71 has, but not all. I believe it has the sway bar, but not the skid plates, rancho shocks, or sticker package.

So when I first read this post I thought there were two trades! It sounds like you are happy with your trade and found some trade-offs to balance out the loss of 4 wheel drive. The whine sounds like something that can be fixed under warranty. I wouldn't accept this as a characteristic of a new truck as there is something that is not right causing the noise!

I think his truck was a GM buyback because previous owner claimed the whine was not repairable.

I agree it's unique but the dealership service mgr said it sounded normal to him. Of course he's incented somewhat to say that to keep me happy, but agree - it's warranted. And it's not awful. And I cannot in any way feel it in the shift or acceleration.

All good. I had the original in 4wd once in the year I owned it. And I had to look for an opportunity to do that. If I get stuck sonewhere, I'll call one of y'all to come pull me out!

Better the tranny whining than than an unhappy owner. So it whines - big deal, they all whine to some extent....that's what metal gears do. The 4 spd tranny on my '74 Impala 454 sounded like a jet turbine spooling up in the first 3 gears....never affected the durability or driveability. If a passenger remarked I turned up the radio - problem solved.

I'm about to wear this out, I understand.

The whine I hear is probably the 2-3 shift. Not at "80 mph in 6th gear only." Which is what the documentation recorded.

Boardmember,

Refresh our memory...so can you go to say another dealer to have the whine fixed under warranty, or are you in an "As-is" situation?

Lots of readers here, so need to be accurate and careful.

The paperwork explicitly states this is a "non branded" title. A good thing.

Full manufacturer warranty remains.

Paperwork states "...This vehicle has been inspected and/or repaired as necessary." I wonder by whom.

For peace of mind, dealership purchased a comprehensive 5/50 warranty from Zurich.

I asked if I went to another dealership for oil change, would they see this was a buy back? No was the answer.

Would GM provide assistance if, in the future, the whine turns out to be something catastrophic, given that I was made aware? I assume so.

Nothing indicates I am in "as-is" situation and dealership has been completely up front to this point.

If there were a whine and someone couldn't/didn't want to continue ownership, in the right state it may not be a nuclear disaster that causes GM to do this. But I don't know for sure. "As-is" would have been unacceptable.

Meanwhile I like it. It's only during that early upshift. I've had it to 80+ four times. No whine.

I'm a little more tolerant than most. Iv had two newer vehicles that used oil. A 94 Z28 and a 99 ford truck 4.6 both at quart at 2500 miles. Both times dealers said they were within spec. The Z went 8 years and 130, ford I put a S/C on it and traded in at 140K. Some people would go out of their minds, if your happy and they back your truck no worries.

I bought a new ford that had a gear whine in the rear diff around 75 mph. dealer changed lube and said it was normal. just out of 1 yr warranty the pinion bearings went bad.

for it to whine 2-3 only is a good thing as that is usually just a short transition but i would try to get it fixed warranty cause the problem may get worse at higher mileage.
