New Ignition Key

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking I want a another set of keys. I found a key fob on eBay. I know how to program the fob.

But what about the key itself? I know how to program a key. Where is the most economical place to get one and get it cut?

I doubt you can buy a random key and have it cut...... have the key cut at the dealership and they will program it also.

Take the existing ignition key, turn to the ON position. Remove it and within 5 seconds (roughly) put the NEW key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. You will see a message on the DIC along the lines of "X keys programmed". Once it does that, start the truck.

EDIT: I'm an idiot I see you stated you know how to program one LOL.

If you still have your key code tags (black tag with a barcode and a 5 digit number/letter at the bottom) you can walk into any GM dealer and they could either order you one (if they don't have the machine) or cut you one if they do have the machine. A cut from GM key lists for $45.61. The blanks are the same price last I checked too which sucks.

cutting these new "laser" keys is expensive. And you need a key with the chip in it.

some people have had luck buying a blank on ebay and finding a locksmith to cut it. But that is still going to cost you around $30 minimum. And finding someone to cut these keys is not easy.

If you go to the dealer and get one, I think the key can be had for around $50-$60, maybe less if you have a relationship with them.

That's really your two options. I was in your boat and I begged the dealer for an extra key. I didn't need another fob, just wanted a spare key. So when we went in to get my wife's car a year after I bought my truck, I was able to get a spare made for my truck for free.

I don't recall getting any code tags with my '17 Silverado. Should I have?

If you feel like going threw the trouble, buy a chipped blank online ebay ...etc. $5. Take it to an Ace hardware and have them cut it.$5 or $10 depends on the guy cutting it.Than program like 15 HDriver stated.

Make sure to check the key in the door and ignition before you leave the parking lot.Might have to go back in for a little deeper cut on the key. Worked for me but did require a little time.

Yes

Probably one of those things the salesman "forgot" when delivering. When I was a kid you'd go back to the motorcycle dealer to get an extra key. You'd wind up buying one they were supposed to give you in the first place.

Does anyone know if a plain key without the electronics is available? I'd like to use it for the glove box only. Thanks.

I found a seller on ebay that will cut the keys from the code as well.

Thanks for the reply Tahoe08. My dealer insists the keys are only available with the chip at around $50. How much was your chipless key?
