Looking to buy GMT900

They changed the seats (they do not hold lint like the 07-08 or 09) later on. My 2010 has better cloth seats than our 08 Tahoe did

I know my 2009 GMC SLE with cloth was HORRIBLE!

Even seems like GM had a "quiet" TSB about these cloth seats. GM offered to replace all of the seat covers (under a special warranty) with "new material" for a customer satisfaction reason. I didn't know the material had changed in 2010-2013. It must have been this "new material" I found in this old TSB.

BTW, the TSB I have mentioned expired years ago- Sorry 2007.5-2009 guys/gals.

Ok guys so been doing some research, and it seems like a lot of people fix their oil consumption issues by changing out he driver's side valve cover to an updated version.

https://gm.oemdtc.com/683/engine-oil-consumption-engine-oil-consumption-on-aluminum-blockiron-block-engines-with-active-fuel-management-afm-2007-2015-cadillac-chevrolet-gmc-pontiac

Does this seem to be something that will fix the issue permenantly?

Or once the damage is done, it will stick with you.....?

Reason I ask is because there is a 2010 silverado with everything I'm looking for (except adjustable pedals) that has 125k miles on it and I don't want to buy something where if it has this issue, I'm going to have to pull pistons....

Why not set aside say $2,000 to physically remove AFM and get a tune to whatever truck you buy? Buy the truck and then remove the issue from your head permanently.

I was concerned too but bought one anyway and no issues so far. When the weather cools I plan to remove the AFM components from the truck and get a tune and never have to concern myself with it again, ever.

Things like what Colossus said.... is what concerns me. Why buy something knowing there's a chance that it's too late. No matter what kind of intermediate fix there is out there, aside from tearing down the engine....

A good seller will let you take the vehicle to a mechanic so he can check it out for you. Anyone familiar with these and that has a computer to read the computer can tell you what is going on. My motor runs flawlessly and my Tech2 confirms it.

Realize that millions of these trucks have been built and they seem to be everywhere in my town (just not 4WD), and many of the folks that come to these forums (hundreds, maybe a thousand or two?) are the ones who have had problems. We know of the improved lifters and valve cover but I reckon most of the problems could be sourced to low and dirty old oil. The owner's manual says to keep the oil level right, not to do so is neglect. Same for ignoring the oil life monitor.

If the truck runs good and you can romp on it and it takes off smartly, chances are very good there's nothing wrong with it.

There's another component to this that I do not know if you subscribe to it or not. That's trusting in the Lord. I trusted in the Lord to find me the right truck and He did.

From the 37th Chapter of the Psalms, "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

That my friend is better than any mechanic or computer!

With AFM it is all about how the truck was cared for. I know of a few people that have higher mileage AFM 5.3s because they kept up on maintenance. MOST people do not keep up on them. I am not trying to take a shot at you by saying this, but if I were you I would gladly take a 6.0 or 6.2 over the 5.3 and wouldn't worry about the gas mileage. I do not know how much you drive a year, but I can bet paying someone to replace the cam, all the lifters, and put the heads back on is gonna be more than you'd save in gas for several years...unless you can do the AFM repair by yourself, its not super difficult. But a truck is a truck, it isn't going to get good gas mileage no matter what. I also don't know what you really need, but I would be looking at 2006 and 2007 crew cab GMT800 trucks as well, in my opinion those trucks are much better built and have better reliability than the GMT900 trucks. I work on a fleet of GM trucks at work, and I see high mileage (2-300k+) GMT800s all the time. My personal 03 has 190 on it, I have had it for years and had very little issues with it in the last 60k miles of driving.

I had a 2011 Silverado Ext cab, 5.3, 3.42, Z71, with Convenience package and i LOVED that truck. Those body styles looked best with extended cab. Never had any issues with mine. ended up upgrading primarily for the need to move to crew cab. I still miss that truck. I'd buy another one without hesitation.
