Looking to buy GMT900

I recently purchased my truck and was also looking for a non AFM truck. I did a lot of vin searching for each vehicle I was looking at. Apparently there were trucks in the 07-09 range that didn't have AFM. Don't know how many did or didn't. Just know that mine does, but it was too good of a deal to pass up. I wouldn't necessarily take this chart as gospel, but I did find the same information in a few places. Also using online vin decoders for each vin I looked up matched up with the information below, at least as far as the 8th vin digit is concerned. Hope this helps.

07-12 are good years before the (new) technology. Reliable long term dependability still can be had. Stay away from cylinder deactivation.

I just reposted in your other thread, but my 2007 with 5.3 had AFM. I never had a problem with it, save for the fact that it burned a bit of oil.

I think the tuners of the world (Blackbear, etc) can disable AFM and that helps with the oil consumption and some of the other AFM gremlins.

My 2017 is leather and I never liked leather, but I'm a believer now. It isn't as hot and sticky as you'd think. Mine is light leather, not black. But even my wife's car isn't too bad with black leather . . .

Are you sure you need the adjustable pedals? Not trying to talk you out of it, but my truck has them and will never be used. I'm fairly tall, so YMMV

I will not buy a 5.3 AFM truck, so when I was looking, I searched for 6.2 trucks. Silverados are hard to find with the 6.2, but Sierra Denalis are a dime a dozen and they have the 6.2. Once you drive a 6.2 truck, you'll not want to "settle" for a 5.3 truck. The Denali is also going to have all the options - adjustable pedals, remote start, heated seats/mirrors/steering wheel, etc. I bought my Denali a few years ago with 70k miles on it, and it's been dead-nuts reliable.

You're also contradicting yourself, saying you want cloth seats but LT trim. LT trim, by definition, includes leather seats. Cloth-trimmed trucks are going to be LS (Chevy) or SLE (GMC), and will not be as nicely optioned out.

False........

LT trucks (gmt900) come standard with cloth. LTZ are leather standard

The old Gmt800s we LS cloth and LT leather

Buy a crew cab 6.2 sierra and call it a day if it doesn't have adjustable pedals. I bet Google can show you after market pedals for you. Don't settle for afm junk.

For example, I'd go look at this truck on my days off and would most likely buy it if it had adjustable pedals....

I'm sure it would be a nuisance and expensive to try and install the adjustable pedals add-on myself right?...

Does this one have AFM? Hard for me to tell...

The little 4.8s did not have AFM. Folks use many of that engine's parts when removing AFM from the 5.3 and 6.0 motors.

A friend traded his truck after the AFM failed and took out the engine. I bought one anyway, GM has made millions of them and removing AFM can be done in as little as 3 hours for a polished mechanic.

You could go 3/4 ton and get an LY6, those did not have AFM.

I reckon you could add the adjustable pedals and switches and have the BCM flashed to get it working.

What's so bad about the 5.3 AFM? I see them a lot.....?

My good friend has a 2011 5.3 with 150k miles and has had 0 issues with the motor this far...?

Is there a year where the AFM was figured out?

Some people will say that the 2010 or 2011 and up models have it "figured out" with a redesigned valve cover. I'm not convinced. Personally, I think the design itself is flawed. I'll buy other brands before I'll buy an AFM truck.

I just returned from a 2.5 week road trip with my Suburban (no AFM) towing an 8600-lb trailer out to Yellowstone. I was major abuse on the engine - cruising for thousands of miles at 3200 RPM, elevations as high as 9600 feet, extreme engine braking above 5000 RPM, so fast that I spun the A/C belt off the pulley without breaking it.

After 5600 miles of abuse, with the oil life monitor reading zero, the oil level was EXACTLY where it was when I started. This engine has 170,000 miles on it.

6.2 means you'll have to run premium fuel if you want to reap the benefits of that engine.

Ok so instead of quoting many people, I'll just add this in:

I would really like to stay away from a 6.0 or 6.2 because of the added expense that comes along with it. And yes, with the 6.2, I would hate having to buy premium fuel.

As far as a 3/4 ton..... Definitely won't do it. I just left the 3/4 ton side of things for a reason lol. Don't need it, added expense, and ride quality isn't as nice....

So if I want to go with no AFM, I'm safe to go with 2008-2009?

I know I sound like a shill here, but have you thought of an 11 avalanche LS? Cloth buckets are standard (dash is same as ltz trucks), and I know some came with adj. pedals, and they have slightly better mpg stats with the 5.3 and 6 speed than the trucks. The afm is revised, and you also get a lot of standard features for an LS that even some LT trucks wont have (its what drew me in). The ride is no contest the best of any truck. Drive one if you can find one.

Even 2007-2009? Why do they get such worse mpg ratings then? The 4 speed vs 6 speed tranny?

You're buying a 6k pound truck and obsessing about MPG. I don't get it?? Every day driving expect 15 mpg, no matter what you get.

That's no lie! I just watch the mpg for potential issues that may be developing.
