Trans Service What A PITA

How is this done??

When I've done it, I've used a couple of 5 gal pails and lengths of rubber hose. Remove the grill from the truck to access the external trans cooler (if equipped), and pop the lines off the cooler.

Put the outbound line in an empty pail and the other in a (very clean) pail that has a bunch of new ATF in it. Have someone start the truck and run it til clean fluid comes out into the used oil pail, then shut off. Keep enough new oil in the clean pail so that it doesn't run out during the process.

When clean oil comes out, the trans is flushed and you can put everything back together..

Just gave up on this with my 06 Avalanche. Couldn't get the top bolt off the driver side catalytic converter. Off to the dealer tomorrow as I could get the pan to seal again.

When I used to do it myself, I unhook transmission line from radiator or cooler set park brake put in gear. When fluid sputters connect line fill with synthetic transmission fluid usually amsoil and go. Now I let the dealer do it.

It's actually very easy to do minus the filter change due to exhaust location. There is a really good write up on silveradosierra.com in the how to section. I bought exactly was it said and had no issues with the fluid. Getting the level right took a little doing but not much
