Plastic louvers in front of Radiator

I was at a body shop today and saw a fairly new (could be a 2017) GMC Sierra with the front end torn apart and there was this big plastic shroud in front of the radiator and behind the grille, that had louvers in it. Looks like they are electrically operated. Is that to block off the air to help warm it up?

Any ideas what that is for?

I don't know what exact model it was.

I don't know what exact model it was.

They're active aero shutters that close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics around the front of the truck. My '17 Sierra has them.

yep, my 2017 Yukon has them, they started in 2017. Its a fuel mileage design. But I think my sticker fuel mileage is the same as my 2015?

I got them too on my 2017!! I wish my 30' model a had them lol

My '17 has them too... Its the active shutters, supposed to help with MPG...

 

They just get in the way of me trying to install my behind the grill light bar lol...

I'll bet you a dollar that the amount of additional fuel used to accelerate that additional ~10 lbs of Stuff every time you take off from stopped is more than you'll ever save driving down the highway. ...just sayin

Might do something on my Malibu with the aerodynamic nose, but you can't make a brick shaped nose aerodynamic. All I see is a potential for overheating in the Summer heat when the louvers fail to open.

All '17 Silverado and Sierra are equipped with shutters
