A Tech at the Dealership is the only way to get these updates done.  And they will probably charge you for it ...

That is incorrect.

ANYONE with a J2534 box, a laptop computer, and $55 to GM for a 3-day pass can perform this. Most non-dealer garages can do this, for a FRACTION of what you'll pay at the dealer. They have the same access to the same info that dealer techs have.

If you were inclined to spend the money, you could do it yourself with some direction from someone who has done it before.

Just an FYI - the info here doesn't do you any good without being able to see what your current software number is in your truck (or car). Not sure if a bi-directional scan tool will even read that number off to you. It DOES display on the laptop screen when connected to the truck through the J-box.

In other words, you may, or may not,  already have the part number listed under whatever module you're looking at after you enter your VIN. In that case, an update will do you no good, unless you're having unresolved glitches.

Development mode on the infotainment screen will also show your some versions of your current software. Press "Power", "Home", and "Menu" buttons at the same time.

Actually you are correct.  But if you don't have the right equipment and experience it's just easier for the dealer to do it so I skipped all that.  Most <reputable> dealers will charge you a standard diagnostic fee to check the updates which is usually around $99.

But good info, and again your instructions are correct.

My whole point was, you DO NOT have to go to a dealer - there are many CHEAPER options out there. Dealership track records aren't the most stellar when it comes to electronics anyway.

Dealerships are for vehicles under the factory warranty period. Once outside of that, you're bang vs. buck goes WAY down.
