Ford Super Duty 7.3 GAS motor

The 8.0L is a stroked L19 'Vortec' 7.4L Mark VI Big Block.  That engine is also marketed to other OEM's through Powertrain Integration, and Freightliner uses it in their S2G propane-fueled medium truck:

The propane 8.0L is also available in Thomas school buses.

 

The 8.8L is a version of the Vortec 8.1L Mark VII Big Block.  It has the redesigned cylinder heads of the 8.1L, and it is manufactured and marketed by Powertrain Solutions Inc.:

Although I think International may be expanding the use of the PSI 8.8L in their large trucks, I don't think either the 8.0L or the 8.8L is what is coming in the new Chevy Silverado 4500/5500.

4500/5500 and 6500

 

   I1B    Engine, Diesel 5.2L 4 cylinder, 215 hp [160.3 kW] @2500 rpm, 452 lb-ft of torque [612.8 Nm] @ 1850-2750 rpm (Governed). 16 valve, four cycle, chain-driven dual overhead camshaft valve train, a cast iron cylinder block, and a cast aluminum cylinder head. Turbocharged, inter-cooled, water cooled EGR, direct injection, electronically controlled common rail fuel system and engine cruise control. Oil level check switch and light. Engine warning system with audible warning for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and a protection system that will reduce fueling if excessive coolant temperature is detected

 

MPQ    Transmission Allison 2550RDS 6-speed automatic 2550RDS, with park paw. Includes PTO Gear. Gear and Ratios 3.51, 1.90 ,1.44, 1.00, 0.74, 0.64, Rev. 5.09

Those are the diesel engine options for the Isuzu-built Chevy LCF's.  The Navistar truck will debut with the L5P 6.6L Duramax.  A gasoline option may be available a year or two later.

Thats a 444.  I had that engine as a diesel for 13 years and 300,000 miles.  Never had a problem, never leaked, as a gas engine I don't know but I know they are not pushing 17.5:1 compression so it should be able to handle a lot of HP.

Completely different engine- Thats an IHD engine they built for Ford. The 7.3 they are talked about is a bored and stroked 6.2 gas truck engine- I think it will end up at 7.0 liters.

 

I hope Gm is working on a DI version of the 6.2 for the HD trucks with more cubes. They can dial the tuning back for durability.

Neither Ford or GM's new engines share anything with current motors, Ford spent crazy money to design a pushrod engine, something they have not done in forever. GM's 7.0 will be a complete redesign as well.

Interesting!  I have heard 2 rumors regarding the Ford, one is that it's an enlarged 6.2L, the other that it's an all new pushrod engine family that will replace both the 6.2L V-8 and the 6.8L V-10.  That later story may indeed be true, I heard some time ago that the 6.2L V-8 was intended to replace the 5.4L 3 valve and the V-10, but had durability issues in testing for the 450 and larger Ford trucks so the V-10 stayed in production.

 

As for the new GM engine, this is the first I have heard that it may be something other than a tall deck LS of some type.  Can't wait to hear more!

 

In any event, with the increasing popularity of gasoline, CNG, and propane fuels for commercial vehicles, it makes sense for both GM and Ford to develop new engines for this market.  GM in particular, as they will likely supply to Navistar International as well.

Nothing but gas F-450-550's and gas Ram 4500-5500's around here.

 

Diesel is done in this series of trucks, customers are not buying them.

 

Ford kicked themselves in the butt as you can no longer get a crew cab gas F-450-550, guessing the 7.3 will bring that option back.

 

I managed a huge fleet of trucks and the company was not happy when their old GM 4500-5500's started rotting out and dieing, they even looked into has them refurbished but couldn't find a source to do it. All the trucks were 8100/Allison and were great trucks.

 

The International's that replaced them were junk.

 

If you want to see the future look to company's like UPS to see what their fleets are doing as they spend millions to figure out what is the most cost effective,very few diesels left in their fleets.

There are very few gasser HDs around here, most are diesels as I stated before...

All the new "package cars" we've gotten here that I've seen in the last year or two have been gassers.  This includes our largest package cars which surprised me.  We still have diesels in use as we're not going to just crush running vehicles.  We've also been phasing out the manual transmissions here, most of the test rides for prospective drivers I've seen this peak have been going out in automatics..BS!!  We've got semis that run on CNG (or one of those gasses anyway) and apparently we just put in a preorder for 125 of Tesla's electric semi.  I think UPS has one of the largest fleet of alternative fuel vehicles.  It's interesting to read about all the different power plants we have driving our delivery vehicles around the world.  I do know our hybrid package cars here are garbage, especially with the way it's charging system works.  It runs off battery and then you have to park it to get the gas generator to charge the batteries up.  That was a long frustrating day in that truck...

Well, I can tell you the UPS and FedEx that delivery to my home and my offices are all diesel...and they were gassers not that long ago. I know, I asked what gasser they were because they run the snot out of them, and it was a GM 6.0l.

If the 6.0l sounds that bad now, I don't want one as the valves rattle at an idle...or it might be a diesel, who knows...

Different locations/regions use different things I suspect.  Here in Florida diesel is expensive and we only have tiny hills.  I don't remember which gasser powers the ones here but the diesels are blutecs or fords if I remember correctly.  It's funny seeing the rental trucks we have that are diesels have bright neon green tape on the DEF tank cap in hopes of preventing someone from putting diesel in them lol.

Most of the newer UPS package cars in Southern California are on Freightliner chassis with L69 6.0L gas engines.  One interesting feature is the 6.0L's are mated to Allison transmissions.
