Power Steering Filter?

notice a puddle of power steering fluid this AM, coming from this part (back half split open) Anyway, I guess this is a filter for power steering?  Is this even needed?

Is it a filter or a check valve? I wouldn't remove it, without replacing in kind...

I went ahead and broke it all the way open, it had a little screen inside of it. So I have to assume it's is a filter

Can you replace the seal/oring? The cold probably made it shrink...

I replaced it filter.. it's all good now.   I guess it was the cold that made the back piece split open like that?  not sure, but it looked like a pretty new filter (truck is new to me)   it was around 20 degrees this AM when I cranked it up.

Typically on aftermarket pumps they sell versions that call for or come with a filter.  They have a label in the boxes, usually Cardone reman units or ones from the same remanufacturer, the three F's, Flush, Fluid, Filter.

apparently all those little in line power steering filters have bad reviews... whether plastic or metal. People complaining about them breaking apart under pressure when cold...exactly that happened to me. 

I'll be removing it  here shortly... and just run without a filter.

Replace with a Magnefine if problematic...
