Low Voltage Issues.

So I'm pretty certain I've figured out my problem but wanted some input first. My truck has barely been starting lately and I've had to use my jump box a handful of times to get the truck started. I thought it was the battery and then noticed on the way home from work the other day my voltage gauge was reading low and since I have a trinity tuner I set up a real time voltage gauge and on my 20 minute drive home the peak voltage in my system never went above 12.5...No bueno. So my question is if this is just a standard alternator with an independent voltage regulator built in or if it communicates with the computer in the truck and maybe the computer is telling it to only put out that voltage for some reason. I just want to make sure before I buy a new alternator.

Did you check the cells of the battery?
