Engine temperature

I too have a Scan Gauge. My temp gauge sits just below 210 when warmed up, but the temperature is really only 190-195. Rarely gets above 200. Heck, the truck's gauge hits that mark when it's barely up to 150.

Dummy gauge at best.

My water temp runs right in the middle 210.
2017 5.3L 6 speed. Perfectly normal operating temp.

Voltage, oil and temp gauges all point to 12 o’clock on my truck when running and at operating temp.

My voltage gauge is dead on the money vs the Scan Gauge II.

Fuel is ballpark accurate. 50% is 52% but full and empty were not so much. Much better correlation since the level.

Water temperature is a joke. When it reads 160 F it is really 100 F. Half way between 160 and 210 on the gauge is actually 150 F, then next mark about 175 and 210 on the gauge a bit more, 212-215. Past that I don't know.

Oil pressure gauge is a liars liar. 40 psi on the gauge is 22-27 and 80 psi on the gauge is 50-54 psi. I've seen hot idle at 18 psi with the dash gauge reading a half needle under 40 psi.

Speed-O 1% slow and Tach is quite good. Odometer is 1% fast and on board MPG meter is a good 15% happy.

TPMS is within a pound of my gauge. It's a pretty good gauge.

The compass isn't to bad.

Idiot lights would be more useful. At least they don't torment you.

This should really be a sticky for the future. Thanks so much for the analysis!!!!

1.) Over oiling and K&N causes problems. Using it as intended in fine.

2.) Factory thermostat is 207F with a +/- of 3 F. They run them hotter and hotter.

I replaced mine with a Jet 170 F unit and LOVE IT. So does my oil temperature. :seeya:

I hate how hot these trucks run. I just bought a 2018 Sierra 1500 crew. Does anyone know if there is an issue running a 170-180 thermostat on these engines? I would guess not but not sure if the on board computer would have a problem with it. I also have the grill shutters. Undecided whether I love or hate the shutters. First time I’ve seen these. Seems like something else that can break and is unnecessary.
