2018 2500HD Tire Replacement/Upgrade

Hello all,

I've read many threads on this forum and others regarding tires/wheels for the L5P HDs. I've got my options sorted out to a few choices and was hoping for some additional advice. I did some searching on this but really haven't come across anything that cleared up my questions.

My plans are as follows:

  • Level front of the truck by going 7-8 turns on stock keys
  • *Possible* 1" block in the rear (most likely not)
  • 20x9 +1 offset wheels

I have been looking at the below tire sizes in a Nitto Terra Grappler G2:

  • 295/60/20 (preferred)
  • 285/65/20 (rubbing expected)
  • 35 x 11.50 (rubbing expected)

On my 14 Silverado 1500, I added a ReadyLift level with 3" rear blocks, Fuel Beast wheels (20x9 +1) and 295/60/20 Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires. I had very slight rub in reverse but was able to reduce much of it with some careful trimming on the inside mount area of the mudflaps.

Has anyone run a set up like I'm considering and if so, did you have much rubbing?

Thank you!

I have a leveled 2500. I use factory wheels on 275/65-20 tires. No rubbing.08be2ca8ae6d47ec951a5bbcded759b8.jpg

There are guys running 35x11.50x20 and 285/65/20 with a level on stock rims. Those sizes on a 9" wide, +1 offset rim will make things interesting. I think it would be close, but might require a bit of trimming. The 295/60's should clear fairly easy though.

Thanks guys.  The 295/60 size that I had on my 14 Silverado 1500 worked pretty well, and I only trimmed the very inner edge of the mudflaps.  I am really leaning this direction because I like the overall diameter (~34") and the witch is pretty nice too at right around 11.75".

What are the stock wheel dimensions?  20x? +20 Offset?

I do not like the chrome wheels on the Denali that I have now, but maybe I'd consider something aftermarket that is close enough in size.

Also, maybe a 275/65 would work?

Thanks, I didn't realize that the stock wheels were +44.  I could probably do a 20x9 +20 offset aftermarket wheel and not have any rubbing, and have just a little bit sticking past the fender.

Too many choices...!

The more I think about this, and the more research I do, is giving me ideas to change my initial plans.

I'm thinking that a 20x9 +20 with 295/60 will be the combination I end up choosing.  Everything I'm reading is that this set up, when leveled, should fit like a glove.

Agree?

I think you’re going to be about the same size...but wider. Than what I have. I would let tire price decide between 275/65 and 295/60. I’m trying to measure out 295/65 on a 0 offset.

That should fit just fine. That tire size is fractions of an inch shorter, but wider than what I'm running...and my rims are 9" wide with +18mm offset. Mine clear easily, without any trimming at all.

Shorter than what?

When I measured +2” from my stock wheel and 275/65’s I was in the fender liner at about 1/2 turnin

Shorter than the tires on my truck. I was explaining that a 295/60/20 is slightly shorter, but slightly wider than the 285/75/17 that I'm running. And, he was looking at +20 offset rims, while mine are +18. So, in theory, his setup should fit...because mine does. I probably should have explained that better....

I had 20x9 +1 rims on my 2017 High Country with a leveling kit.  Biggest tire I could fit was a 285/55/20 that I thought looked too small.  I took off those rims and went back to the factory 20’s.  I put 275/65/20’s on the factory rims.  Personally I think the best look is 305/55/20 on a +18-+25 offset wheel.   I just can’t blow any more money on my wheel and tire addiction.  The 305’s on +20 will clear just fine

Here is a pic of 305/55/20 on 20x9 +25 Worx wheels I had on my previous 2015 3500

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
