Best Brand Oil and Filter for 2000 Silverado!?!

What’s your most preferred oil and filter go r your truck? I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3L what should I use? Currently running Mobil 1 high mileage full synthetic 5w30. I’m wondering if there’s a better oil that’s more suited for my truck? I will say the high mileage Mobil 1 does Not have the “dexos” stamp of approval.

 

I’m thinking of next run to go 10w30 (comb or synth) (m1 or different) with an ac delco filter, to see if I can tell a difference. A local mechanic said this small knock I have (I have another thread about it) is just fine and that I should use an ac delicious filter because they have something different with their filter that prevents it (I don’t know). So I was going to give it a shot.

Ran valvoline, then valvine high mileage and now full synthetic high mileage with wix. Had gotten to 350k on 01 burb, but with so many leaks - decided to replace with a rebuilt.

For a 2000, I'd go with a NAPA Gold or Platnium, (Wix) and 5W30 full synthetic, be it Valvoline, Mobil-1, Quacker State, it really doesn't matter.  They all do a fine job.  Change the oil every 5000 miles on a 2000, have an oil analysis done once a year to see how the engine is wearing, and be happy you have a great truck.  no need to throw out extra $$$ for the so called premium brands unless you are racing the thing.

The only special feature the filter could possibly have is an anti drain back valve.  All good filters that meet the specs for that engine will have this feature.  I use Amsoil filters because I like them.  Use what you like.  Do some filter research.  They are not all made the same way.  Check out bobistheoilguy.com.  lots of really good analyis and comparison.

Which will show Amsoil and filter or Mobile 1...and filter.  Filter is as important as the oil and no, like some have stated, not all oil is created equal.

An oil filter is an oil filter. You can spend $15 or $2 on a filter. They both cost the same to manufacture, and have the same minimum performance standards. They are all acceptable according to the vehicle manufacturer. They are pretty much all made the same way and with the same materials. Many different "brands" are made by the same manufacturer. Some people say "I ALWAYS use the best for my car! Best oil filters, best oil, etc". Use what ever makes you happy. As long as you change your oil every 3k miles, keep the fluid levels up, and don't overheat it, your engine will last longer than you need it to.

I agree totally.

I have used fleet oil filters for years.

Buy them at auto stores by the dozen.

Same filter used by quick lube joints.

Your current product use will be just fine.  No need to change unless you want to lighten your wallet some and go with Walmart Supertech oil and filter which are both good for 5k oil changes easy.

I use to be a huge fan of Mobil 1 when it was still a POA but now that it's a hydrocracked mineral oil it has placed itself on the same level as (most) any other 'full synthetic'. All but my best stuff gets Quaker State UD now. Sits right next to Mobil and is about $3-$5 for five quarts cheaper. I wouldn't hesitate to use Valvoline, Castrol, or even Pennzoil (since Shell got control) Full Synthetics these days to 5K. Dad uses some Farm/Fleet Full synthetics to crazy motor lives on 7.5K changes in my sisters car but...she drives almost 100% highway and long distance (work). Blends and straight mineral oils 2.5K...3K tops.

 

On filters I use to use Bosh Premium or Mobil 1 when I couldn't find a Bosh. Today I use WIX or NAPA which is made by WIX. While they all pretty much look the same inside there are some media differences. Bypass spring differences. And some difference in the bonding of media to plate. Anyway the WIX (made by WIX) is just as good, better IMHO, as the Mobil or Bosh (made by Champion) and half the price.

If you are still old school and do oil changes every 3000 miles then those cheapies will be just fine.  But for the rest of us who have evolved along with the technology, a 5000-10,000 mile full synthetic oil change requires a different type of filter.  It's as simple as that.

While I agree 100%, I can't help but think of those poor neglected cars that get oil changes maybe once in their life. Those old filters are probably long since plugged and in full bypass, but when did they go into bypass? 5k miles, 10k miles, 30k miles? Probably too many variables to ever determine.

Although I had a Gulf Coast bypass filter installed (in other words, the primary filter wasn't being loaded), I have ran conventional filters out past 25k miles without issue...one Fleetguard I took to 45k miles. They don't fail (as far as I know), but I would guess they would plug off at some point (especially in a spot-laden diesel). For what it's worth, the paper towels would come out crunchy and a solid mass from the Gulf Coast after significant miles because of the soot loading.

That reminds me, I got to change oil this weekend!
