Worst case if AFM problems crop up ......open it up and do a delete kit .

There’s more to it than that. The vacuum pump that goes with it. There’s been problems with those, the cam, push rods. The lifters fail and send metal through the engine etc. A shop doing a delete kit before there’s a problem is going to charge at least 2500$. That’s for something that shouldn’t be there in the first place. If it has cylinder deactivation I wouldn’t buy it I don’t care who makes it. Unless they warranty it and any related parts for 150K miles. Simply removing and reinstalling lifters is funny. There’s more to it than that.

I’d rather have a turbo charge V6 than cylinder deactivation. There’s where the problems will be. I got rid of my 14 when the warranty was done because of cylinder deactivation.

That’s ridiculous! Turbos go out all the time and have to have perfect rpm, climate etc. My neighbor has a new over $100K 18 Raptor with its over priced twin turbos in the shop regularly. You can shut off your V4 mode with a plug in but turbos suck! Direct injections ROCK!

But I’ll take this with my 6.2 cylinder deactivation any day over any turbo f414a3e5af7afb092e720d42cf9cd90c.png

That’s ridiculous! Turbos go out all the time and have to have perfect rpm, climate etc. My neighbor has a new over $100K 18 Raptor with its over priced twin turbos in the shop regularly. You can shut off your V4 mode with a plug in but turbos suck! Direct injections ROCK!

Oh, here’s my big ass Yukon XL with over 31K miles on it loaded down with 5 people and two 120 pound dogs on recent 5K road trip and cylinder deactivation with cruise set on 83 mph. 6d5a1b88b9126d3cda44b582b0cf85f8.png

My experience with turbos are with diesels. Some were modified. Turbo goes bad you usually can tell before it happens if you pay attention. You lose one of those cylinder deactivation lifters you know it when it’s to late. The vacuum pump goes bad same thing, trash through the engine. I wouldn’t have a turbo gas engine either, but if I had to choose I’d pick the turbo.

I'm going to look at this with a positive out look.

I believe the engineering is up to par.

You hear about the problem ones but I won't condemn the rest.

 

I think a properly maintained vehicle that it not abused will stand the test of time. Your definition of properly maintained will affect it's longevity.

 

My brother in law has two 1988 vehicles. A 3/4 ton Chevy and a Pontiac Grand Prix.

Both bought used.

The Pontiac Quad 4 has been the worst of the two. Problems include the coil pack system, a head gasket replaced  rebuilt the front end, other than that the regular maintenance stuff, starter, batteries, alternator. He still finds what he needs. It's the daily driver. It gets 30 MPG. It currently has 230 K miles on it.

 

I'll keep my 2012 until they give me the dirt blanket.

I'll do stellar maintenance, no long oil change intervals.

I’ve had plenty diesels for toys and work with excellent history, one today at the yard has over 200K miles with never having any issues. My last DMax with approx 50K mikes on it was immaculate, never once in the shop except for one recall, just got rid of it cause my wife thought it was was to burly of a truck for her to drive and really had no need for it, traded it in and a customer on the lot gave me $6K less than I paid for it being two years old. Today, GM makes great products with enormous world wide support and endless parts.

A delete kit is about 700 and change I believe. A mechanic should easlly do it in about 12 -14 hrs . If you paying mechanic 100 per hr 1,200 -1,400 . so yes about 2,200 - 2,500 max. If you don't trust GM vacuum pump replace it aftermarket for about 150. Hell you lose more than double this on first year depreciation hit on new . Yes this would be pro-active cost if you are worried about AFM failure in the long haul.

I’ve had more GM than anything else. I had the 5.7 6.5 diesel that sent me to Dodge diesel for a while. That being said I believe the current crop of GM trucks are ahead as far as quality in terms of driving experience. Very quiet for a truck. My preference would be a V-8 that stays a V8. I don’t buy a V8 truck to get 30 miles per gallon. I have cars for that. If a person wants that give them the V-6 or turbo 4. No trick V8 for me. All those extra moving parts for what a mile or two per gallon? I did the test with my 14 GMC on trips at 72 MPH V4 hardly came on. I had a tune I didn’t gain a mile per gallon with cylinder deactivation on.

I’ve never met anyone that bought brand new truck based on reprogramming them. I bought mine cause it’s very reliable, drives and looks awesome. Every vehicle will cost lots of money doing literally anything to it but that’s what you get when you put your mind set into doing so. I won’t buy a used truck specifically because so many people do that exact thing, tune and f’up the truck, trade it in cause they screwed it up and then you get stuck with messed up truck then give the manufacturer a bad rap all due to trying to custom tune.

Totally get it but neither of mine are tuned, didn’t buy a truck to go fast, and yet I’m very impressed with mpgs and quality. I owned a dodge diesel once, always in the shop for injector issues. Besides, why buy a vehicle and then try and change everything about the way it’s programmed. Back when I was single wild and wild [emoji12] I had my slant nose twin turbo 4, smoked anything literally on the road, that was extremely fast. My Ducati was fast too, I’m a truck guy now, without plaid [emoji6]

I almost bought a ford turbo V6 for that after watching a truck show that claimed 100 HP boost with a tune. All my diesel were modified, usually banks 6 gun I think it was called.

The good old days! Grew up hearing about that especially in the late 80’s and mid 90’s. I had a shop tuned that dodge and it fell apart. One of my best friends is a GM for a very large off-road company and pushes me away from doing anything in mods for my gasser. Diesels seem to have much more reliability on tunes than gassers.

I put so many HWY miles on any tuning I did had very little affect on the reliability of my trucks. My nephew in 2010 had a Ram that ran 10s and a daily driver. It won fastest diesel in Texas in 2010. He had crazy money in that. His dad is a Dodge nut. He runs a 79 little red truck he bought new. He wouldn’t put a roll bar in it so it’s tune to just over that. He has a least six old dodges he working on. I stopped with my 92. Another way to look at this is that time will eventually immortalize  current engine technology as simple and solid!  We also continue to raise the bar with our expectations. In the "good old days" buying a truck approaching 100K miles meant you were buying a rebuild/project vehicle.  Now when you buy a truck with this kind of mileage your biggest concern is if you should replace the original spark plugs.
