Undercarriage coating

I'm going to look into the Amsoil metal protector Black02Silverado mentioned above.  I've used several Amsoil products and have been very happy with them.  Either way, I definitely will do application myself regardless of the product I choose.

To touch up the under coating the other option is AMSOIL's HD Metal Protector.  It works really well and is not sticky or tacky once dry so it will not attract dirt or dust.

AMSOIL HD Metal Protector

second that on metal protector HD. Used it on my 15 sierra new and truck still looks new after 3 maine winters.

If you want, I can send a quote on the HD Metal Protector delivered.  Just send me a PM with your address and how many cans you would like to purchase.

How many cans do you think it would take to do a proper job?  What sort of longevity does it have compared to fluid film?  I haven't researched it yet, so will have to get some information before I buy.

Two cans should cover it.  I have not used it, being down here in eastern NC my 2002 still looks good from the factory.  One individual I know purchased 3 cans just to be safe.  I know it depends on how you apply it as in overlapping the coats and trying to spray inside the frame and body panels.

As for length of time it lasts.  It should be good for a year, unless you do a lot of under body washing or go through car washes that spray underneath then maybe twice a year application, but in general it should last a full year easily.

I'm in north western PA and they like to use a lot of salt on the roads here.

It won't be going through any car washes (I only do that to old beaters I don't care about the paint).  I would definitely get under and power wash it after winter and reapply.

How much is it per can?

Carbon fiber has come a longnway, but even though it's cheaper than it used to be it's still really expensive. There's no way right now they could make a carbon fiber frame affordable, it'd probably run you $200,000 or more. The truck frame would only weigh 100 pounds though, lol.

But I'll tell you, take a look at what they're doing with carbon fiber nowadays. I mountain bike, they're making the rims out of carbon fiber now and they can take the pounding better than the aluminum. We used to worry about carbon fiber bike frames, that doesn't even cross anyone's mind anymore. I've never seen one break. Rode one for two years...I'm 240 pounds, I put that bike through hell...crashes, hitting rocks, going off drops, things hitting the frame every two seconds, constant stress. Zero issues.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I agree, for certain loaded configurations it is great, but I also bet you don't leave your bike laying outside all day in the sun, rain, and elements, and you aren't chucking heavy, pointy objects or loads of gravel and dirt onto it either.

I race hydroplanes in APBA sanctioned stock and modified outboard categories and in recent years some of the builders have been turning out all carbon fiber boats.  Yep, they are light 80lbs vs 120ish pounds for plywood versions, but they don't last.  3 maybe 4 seasons and they are cracking and leaking like sieves from the pounding they get and exposure to the sun and water.  10+ year old plywood boats are common on the race circuit.  We could build the layers a little thicker, but if the boat turns out to weigh the same as a plywood boat, then there's no gain in that respect and whole lot more $$$ just to say you have a carbon boat.

Yes it can. Not sure how much of a difference in color you will get.

A can retails for $13.10, but all GM-Truck members  get a discount when ordered from me.

Very reasonable.  I'm not looking to do it right now (I'm using my GI Bill to go to school (online) so right now I'm tied up with work and sitting on this idiot box all night every night after work.  I have a break coming up starting in August, so I'll get with you then sometime.

That was my next question.  If I wait until sometime late in August or even September, I may need to pressure wash underneath though to get rid of some dirt and grime before spraying.

Does the stuff totally dry out in a real thin layer, or does it stay tacky or form a little thicker layer?  What's it's viscosity like out of the can?

It sprays out nice and dries to like a wax feel.  Not sticky at all, does not attract dust or dirt.  It can also be used on motorcycle chains.  You just need to give it a good 24hrs to dry since you would be spraying so much of it to cover the entire underside.

OP, its just a wax coating, its soft and will come off in places especially where anyone will lift the vehicle by the frame and is scraped off in the process.

Just order a of case of 12 cans of nox-rust wax, I do roll under my truck from time to time, I always check it and apply wax here and there as needed, 2 years old still on 1 can.
