I wish there was a way to tell as well. I want it for mountain highway travel so can better use engine braking/tow haul mode.

I know when I'm in second, its the gear right after the slam/bang. I lose track after that. If I'm in 7th or 8th and click it into Manual it drops down to 6th automatically.

Other than manual mode, no.

Well that's disappointing. Thank you

My motorcycle has this feature.  It is informative but my driving isn't dependent on the number indicated.  If it's revving too high or struggling I change gears accordingly.  Unfortunately our trucks do not come with a manual transmission so you have less say in what gear you want!    Your tachometer provides far more useful information for your purposes than a gear number readout, imo.

Just put it in M6 (or M8 if you have the 8 speed). Same thing as D as it will still shift through all the gears like normal but you can see what gear it's in on the screen.  And if you want to down shift at any time you can just by tapping the button.  I do this out of habit now. I always select M then go up to 7 just so the AFM don't activate, then when I reach speeds where needed I can click up up to 8 when needed then back down to 7 depending on driving conditions.

Fords have this, odd that GM doesn’t as it would be pretty simple to add.

Yeah you would think it would be one of easy, obvious pieces of information to display.

So would auto up switches for passenger and rear windows.

If I put mine in M6, it will read M6 continuously.  If I put in M4 for example, it will not shift higher than 4th gear but will shift up to 4th without changing the readout. Is this different than yours?

No that's the same as mine, I just had a moment there and was explaining that you can see what gear your in on the screen when in fact you can not.  My fault. OP, Donstar is correct, sorry for giving wrong information.

I said the same thing about Ford not showing true oil pressure in their trucks. Their oil pressure gauge is at 12 o'clock or at 0 psi depending on whether the oil pressure switch is on or off. It's nice to see real oil pressure so I have to give GM credit for putting a real analog gauge in. But yeah, completely ridiculous that GM can't be bothered to display which gear you're in. It's something that would be trivial to add. TFLT have brought it up year after year in their reviews.

Get an edge cts2 and you can see what gear you're in and a whole lot more. It even lets you know when the torque converter locks up. Transmission temp etc.

With all the tech that’s the trucks have they should be able to look at the gear , oil press , and all that but I just hook up a live data scanner and it’s all there so they could improve what you see in the dash

If you didn't already know this, for at least the 17 with trailer package:
1) set your haul mode to hill descent mode
2) set your cruise at desired speed
Ensure haul mode is on, and the truck will automatically shift for engine brake.
