I have a 16 Silverado Custom. Has anyone put in a remote starter but program it to a chevy key fob? Mine doesn't have the remote start button but i'd like to keep the chevy key fob but i don't want to go through the dealer.

GM sells it as a kit. I think there is several different kits? So look it up for your truck. There’s several other threads on this as well. If you don’t want to do the install yourself your stealership should be able to do it for you they will have to reprogram your bcm and fobs anyway. Somebody on here said their stealer did it all for $350. Reprogram only runs around 100 bucks as far as I know it has to be the dealer.

Also if you tackle this yourself or if you order the kit and have somebody else install it sign up for Chevy Legends if you qualify. They give you a discount code for 20% off accessories and send you a free hat...

X2 on that you can install the kit yourself but dealer has to take the authorization code on the paperwork in the box, and call GM to authorize the reprogram of the truck, and then the dealer has to reprogram any necessary modules and then add the new fobs.

So your current fob does not have the start button, but you want a new chevy fob with the button?

Where are you going to get that? from ebay?

I looked into buying a spare set and these stupid keys and fobs are ridiculously expensive. I don't know if you have any good alternative to going to a dealer if you want it to work with your factory fob.

But there is one alternative: get get an aftermarket remote starter that has its own button. We put one on my wife's old toyota and you could actually remote start it by holding the toyota fob lock button for 3 seconds. If I were you I'd talk to a local audio/video store that installs these kits and see what they offer for your truck. There may be one you can activate with your existing fob in the same way and avoid the dealer altogether.

FYI, there is more to a remote start system than just the starter, there is also a hood switch that won't allow it to start with the hood open. I would only trust a professional to install this, but that's just me.

If I have to, I don't mind having the second fob. I just wasn't sure if it was going to be inexpensive to keep it on one or not. Figured I would try and see who's tried it. Thanks for the advice though guys

This is one option that will use your factory fobs you have now. Hit the lock button 3 times to start. I did some research on these before we bought the wife’s last SUV since some we were looking at didn’t have factory remote. I didn’t do to much research in the way of pricing since I was of the opinion if we went this way we would upgrade to a two way anyway since her office is farther way than a one way will work and to gain start confirmation

I had one of these Compustar remote start kits installed on my 13 Impala 2 years ago. Cost me $230 installed with tax.It is all plug and play. No slicing wires. Still have to have a installer flash the module for your vehicle since they dont come with any firmware loaded on them. Uses the factory non remote start gm key fob. Just press the lock button 3 times. They do offer adons for extended range with a different remote or smart phone app.

On my 16 Silverado ls I ordered the GM remote start kit off ebay. Installed it myself then took to dealer to have the truck programed and key fobs programed. My dealer charged me $150 to program it. Kit cost me $215. With the GM kit if you have the basic Onstar free for 5 year package you can use the Onstar or mychevrolet smart phone app to start or unlock the vehicle free for those 5 years.I thought that benefit was worth the extra cost over the Compustar kit.

By the way both these kits come with a hood safety switch that you are suppose to use. I didn't install the switch/latch on either vehicle and both work fine without it. As long as the dealer does not check if the switch is present when you have it programed.
