Engine Knock?

So on my truck when i get on the gas or the engine is logging some, I hear a rattle coming from the left front and it’s definitely coming from the engine bay. It sounds like what an old diesel sounds like when it’s lugged down. It’s hard to explain but is this normal? It’s done it since new but seems to get worse the more miles I get on the truck. I now have 74,000 miles on it and my warranty is good out to 120K. Is this something i should have the dealer look at?

As a magic 8 ball says "all signs point to yes"

Doesnt sound normal. Have it looked at.

I had a similar situation at about the same mileage as you.  I noticed that the noise was reduced if not eliminated when I filled up with 89 or higher octane.  I ended up trying a can of CRC GDI intake valve cleaner as i thought it may be related to some carbon buildup.  I switched back to 87 octane after the cleaning for a few tanks and the pinging isnt eliminated completely but it is significantly reduced.  I think i will try the BG induction service next and see how that goes.  There is some more info in this conversation:

Thanks! I had the induction service done at the last oil change by my dealer. It really sounds like a pinging noise and I suspected it was possibly something with the fuel. I’ll try a higher octane next time I fill up and see if that doesn’t help. I’m also going to change the oil over the weekend myself and cut the filter open. I usually have the dealer do the services, but I want to take an oil sample and see inside the filter this time.

I may even try some of that hotshots oil additive stuff. Anyone ever use that?

There are lots of different ways to raise the octane.

The higher octane fuel = Less volatile (less flammable)

The lower octane fuel = more volatile (more flammable)

When I was racing, we used to mix airplane fuel to dilute the pump gas, thus lowering the octane level in order to accommodate the higher compression motors.

Having made few million barrels of gasoline and finding out no one cares that the maker might know something about the creation I provide a source most hold highly regarded. Enjoy.

I think you’ve got that backwards. You’d want a higher octane to resist pre ignition in high compression engines. Same with boost. Mixing airplane gas with pump gas would raise the octane, not lower it.
