Anyone else have this issue when I have the truck in Auto 4wd and park on a slight downward hill and then shut off trick it will move forward about an inch or so after about 5 secs like an electronic release or something. Is this normal? Sorry if this has been discussed, I didnt find anything in the search.

Parking related issues are addressed in the owners manual including parking on a hill. You might find some good info in there about this.

Are you sure the vehicle doesn’t do it when it’s in 2wd? I’m not sure how Auto could induce the problem.

“5 seconds after the vehicle is turned off...” By any chance is this when you remove your foot from the brake pedal to get out of the vehicle? If so, then the movement is likely normal, although not a good practice to allow it to occur.

The owners manual recommends setting the parking brake prior to releasing the pedal brake to prevent torque lock when parking on a hill. The sequence is, pedal brake, parking brake, transmission [Park], turn off and REMOVE key from ignition, exit vehicle. If the key cannot be removed then the transmission lever is not fully in Park and the vehicle could roll.

Just the slack in the gears before the parking pawl is fully engaged. Of the 11 vehicles I’ve owned, the only ones that didn’t do it were manual transmissions. My wife’s explorer feels like it moves 6”.

I understand the proper way to park on a hill but Im wondering is this normal or a sign of transfer case malfunction. Also it doesnt happen when in 2wd.
