Anyone do a T1 steering wheel swap yet?

My only complaint on my wheel is the stupid rubber buttons.  Even my near base model '18 Cobalt car at the office has the same rubber buttons (missing the collision alert and heated seat buttons of course).  Same goes for the really crappy '19 Malibu I had as a rental the past couple of days...boy that car sucked; it felt like an oversized Cobalt while being slower and handling worse in pretty much every situation you could put it in and I wouldn't exactly want to own a Cobalt.

 

Anyway, the T1 wheel is nicer for sure.  Everything looks the same except the center buttons.  Anyone do this swap?  How were the results?  Cost and P/N's?  Airbags the same?  Seems like a pretty logical upgrade and an easy resale on my wheel as a lot of folks like to do the heated wheel upgrade on their models that didn't come with it.

Your best bet is to work with your GMC parts department.  They can pull up the diagram of the parts needed and their cost.  My parts department even gave me copies of the diagrams when I was working on a different project on a previous Silverado.

So far, general consensus on the T1 forum is the new scrolling wheel is not as desirable or functional as K2's arrow pad.

Hmm. Never would have guessed that.... I guess since I dont have it, I would think its better.  Well, Im not gonna try it. But I really wish they had climate controls on the wheel of the k2...

Im actually researching that now. Im hoping my buddies at the local dealer will let me pull a wheel off and inspect it  they're usually cool about that

This.  When I first saw pictures of the '19 the change in steering wheel was one of the things I hated.  Once I actually drove one the new buttons were even worse that I expected.

Yeah, I have driven a lot of GM's over the years but the K2 has by far the nicest feeling steering wheel and control set up yet, in the SLT/LTZ + anyway. Thick leather wrap, red stitching, real polished aluminum trim, comfy/well placed buttons with positive clicking. WT's are nothing special but I love the steering wheel and button layout in my SLT. GM stepped up their steering wheel game after being ridiculed for the Corvette steering wheel in the C6 platform in the mid/late 2000's.

I'd hardly call rubber buttons stepping up their game.  I'm coming from a 2nd Gen Escalade EXT.  Quality of wheel, I say the Escalade's was equal or better.  Buttons are more functional due the higher tech in the truck, but not nicer.  Wheel in my wife's Audi B8.5 S4 is much nicer, buttons and all.  GM still needs to step up the wheel game.  It is nicer than my BMW 335i, but that wheel was first offered in 2006...

 

I'm not looking to pioneer this swap.  Hoping someone else shares their leg work and I'll copy.  Too many other projects to figure this out on my own.

Maybe the issue you are having is downgrading interiors from Luxury vehicles to a pickup trucks? As far as the swap goes, I am sure they would mount right up but I cant say for sure. It is doubtful that GM changed anything dimension wise in the steering department as this is essentially a body refresh. Wiring may use a different harness or added wires for the new features but mounting wise it should work. I put a '98 tilting steering wheel from a K1500 on a '94 C3500 so I could have adjustment, but no fancy features back in those days. You are probably going to have to be the guinea pig on this one if you are serious about it. Order a wheel and try it when they become available.
