Transmission Finally Died

It made it 161000 miles. Not bad for a GM trans I think, can't really complain.

Now I'm at that awkward point where I'd like to get rid of the truck, but I'm going to pay for a new transmission so then I feel obligated to keep driving it.

Thats a really good lifespan.

It is one of those things especially if you work your truck.

Just curious but what kind of service did you do to the transmission in those 161k miles?

No service, which is partly why I'm so pleased with how long it lasted!

Yep, working with all the plowing and never changing the fluid, it lasted longer than most.

My friend who works at a trans shop says they do a lot of these. He said he just finished replacement trans #2 on a 2014 like mine, with 180k total miles. Factory trans went at 130k.

You could always try to sell it with a bad transmission. Never hurts to throw it on Craigslist for a couple weeks. If you are going to replace the transmission, you might be better off buying a rebuilt one, and then calling around for the best install price.

I would be really happy with 161k with no service on a working truck. I assume it’s a 6 speed.

Some people seem to lose track that clutches wear down and trans fluid degrades over time. The harder you work the truck, the faster things deteriorate. 161k hard miles is impressive to me. Glad to hear you’re pleased with it too rather than dogging it for not living forever.

My 99 went 346K on the stock trans. She pulled a lawn trailer 2 days per week and was my daily in outside sales. I was really impressed with it.

I can't get 100k out of a GM without it crapping itself......and I service as per manual :sigh: ........but I always come back to GM:P

If it makes you feel any better, 50 years ago cars never even made it to 100k. Having your motor throw a rod at 50k was super common. And cars would start rusting within a year of manufacture. It was horrible.

My first car was a 1965 Impala SS, my Dad bought it for my in 1976 for my 16th Bday. It had 160k on it and I put another 75K on it with only a timing chain going bad. Wish I still had it, I did end up putting a 327/300hp in it a few years later as the old 283 was weak. Not all were junk. And yes I did tear out the powerglide by backing up and  throwing it in gear to spin the tires, Good Times!!!!

Thats pretty amazing, I've always been told cars prior to about 1980 were mostly garbage.
