I'm counted as one of the number of 6L80E owners who runs and loves AFM. Over 85K miles and have never had a harsh shift, up or down. Mistimed shift. Not a clunk one. Never get a 'chopper' sound out of her. Seems to anticipate the need for the absolute correct gear in any mode. D, M5, Tow/Haul, grade decent on or off. 110 F or -35F, it just works and both the transmission and the AFM are absolutely invisible. Part of the reason for installing the Scan Gauge II was to see if the AFM was even working and to let me know what gear I was in. That said there are a fair number who count themselves in the other camp who have all manor of issues. That should tell you something right there and yet this lesson gets lost on almost everyone who has a problem. Why it that? Seriously, why is that? This set up is capable of flawless operation. IF yours is not, get the **** thing fixed! Never going back to V4 mode and truck drives flawlessly in V8 mode. I will bring it in if it breaks but since it is a lease i will live with it for 2 more years and gladly turn it in. The truck is great but i have a feeling it will be really expensive to fix down the road.
Sierra Dan Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 V4 or V8.... at least we are not current 2019 RAM owners with brake pedal detachment syndrome!
Grumpy Bear Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 LOVE the belt comment....ROTFLMAO. I remember these sorts of concerns when hydraulic lifters fist came into the picture. Then the roof came off with roller tappets and an atomic blast was felt with hydro-rollers introduction. That was Race Only with no place in a grocery getter. We should have stopped with chilled white iron mushroom flat tappet systems! All these others are WAY to complicated. To heavy. Require to much spring pressure. Beats seats out. Valve/rocker breakers. To many moving parts. To many ways to fail. Lord my father and his brothers and brother-in-laws would sit around Uncle Bob's kitchen table and go to war over it. Should have heard my Dad when I bought my first Honda VVT..... C'mon guys, you remember those battles....You likely participated in a few yourself. Tell ya what. IF and it's a BIG if; I ever decide to disable my AFM it will be with a cam and lifter kit at rebuild time. IF complexity is the reason to disable it, then just eliminate it altogether. K.I.S.S. Just say' n. A Range doesn't simplify anything. Just removes opportunity for ONE failure mode. If as SS502 says, it might be a 'material issue'.... I just might at rebuild time. Hope they have something better than plastic guide trays by then, eh? Hey, anyone up for a Nova 396 and a Powerglide? There's simple. (and fun)

I think torque converter. Jim My 4.3 had a shudder also. It went away when I changed to a MBRP exhaust. I am pretty sure it was the exhaust flapper valve that caused the shudder in v4. I have tried the Range device, a Superchips tuner and a Hypertech tuner. With v4 enabled I only got about .5 MPG increase in fuel economy. My truck will rarely go into v4 mode and stay in it above 35 mph. Just curious if any other 4.3 v6 owners see v4 mode above 35mph much??
Fuelie Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 This forum seems to be sensitive to GM transmissions being clunky.... My wife has a 16 Toyota Camry that has a clunky transmission sometimes, I rent cars for work a lot, it seems like most of them do not have a consistent smooth shifting tranny. My 2018 LTZ is a little clunky at times but just like my 17 it never gives me any trouble. I think it's just the world we live in , I have yet to have a GM transmission failure and I go thru a lot of trucks. I think a lot of people just need something to pick on to make them feel good. The sky is falling Tom

When cruising at 70+ mph fuel economy drops and V4 mode isn't as common to appear.

My preferred speed and has added about 10% to my live time fuel economy. In the winter or on windy days it's hardly on at all. It is a load dependent device.
Bob985 Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 My v4 lights up quite a bit when im on the freeway also. Seems kind of weird
