Wow mine is as well, 2017 with 8500 miles. Kept outside in NE FL humidity. I've noticed rust underneath my center jump seat cupholders too as I pulled out the plastic piece to shove an ant trap in there. I've been wondering how little sugar ants have found their way in. This looks like the culprit area.

Ok so finally something other than 2018. Every single one so far has been 2018 I was wondering if it was something specific to that year.

GM also saved a few cents on 2019 T1 trucks by switching the hood release from metal to plastic.

Come on Dan...you know as well as I do they switched to plastic so it wouldn't..............rust!:D

Maybe this won't ever be a problem.   However, I would take my truck to the dealership and politely tell them it is unacceptable.   You want a properly coated replacement piece for your peace of mind.  This is a powerful picture and when added to the fact that this is an integral part of your steering, I doubt you will get much of an argument.  Let us know what they say and do!

I get a pic of that in the AM. I'm curious too. Hey not only is it rusty, it could be faded too.

Well this is about as good as I could get.
It appears sealed up well on the inside of the boot and there is grease on the upper portion of same. I don't think any type of creature could enter at this point and no cold air could filter through.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill IMO.

Likely part of a weight reduction effort

@Donstar I know you wanted an update. Went to my local GM dealer and they ordered me a new steering shaft for warranty replacement. I showed them a picture of my other truck’s shaft and they said that mine was excessive rust. So I don’t know if that means that others would not get replaced that are more surface rust.

It is definitely just surface rust on an unpainted piece of steel. The same shaft is going to go in. When they replace it you should get under there and cost it with some type of oil or grease if it concerns you that much. A little piece of scotch bright would have cleaned that right off.
