Help identify this rusted piece

Surface rust on the steering intermediate shaft.  Won't affect the performance of the part.

I see no bulletins/TSBs for any issues regarding that part, or the boot which it passes through.

The rust is harmless.

Eventually most vehicles develop rust on the bolts and fasters of the interior at some point.

More than the rust, this open area allows critters in.

Not to mention cold and warm air in relevant climates. Talk about driving with chilly feet! :smash:

Yes, it just appears as surface rust on my fingers so I'm not concerned at this point. I'll spray a light mist of T-9 on it this weekend.

Yeah just a big hole there is probably not the best thing. We shall see what they say at the dealer

Let us know. It does seem like it should be sealed better.  Maybe the grommet is further outside of the cabin and we just don’t see it.

Mine appears to be sealed quite well under the hood. Nothing entering the cab through there.6ba7a524c596380b94dcdf6c47294a4d.jpg

The first picture seems to have progressed past “surface” rust. I won’t argue that the part may not be under much rotational stress, but that truck is relatively new and very low mileage to have such advanced corrosion especially on a steering component.

That rust is harmless. In a million miles it won't weaken the shaft. The opening in the firewall is still a concern as moisture getting thru can damage more delicate parts.

GM saved a few cents per truck not painting it.

Not a dangerous situation.

Sad but probably true.

Great Picture reference Capt. Bob.

But what does yours look like where the boot/grommet goes into the firewall on the inside of the cab at the floorboard?

GM also saved a few cents on 2019 T1 trucks by switching the hood release from metal to plastic.

I get a pic of that in the AM. I'm curious too. Hey not only is it rusty, it could be faded too.

Okay, mine has very slight surface rust, hard to see behind the Pedal Commander plugs but it’s not nearly as bad as yours and I do live in a very wet and humid environment.

Wow mine is as well, 2017 with 8500 miles. Kept outside in NE FL humidity. I've noticed rust underneath my center jump seat cupholders too as I pulled out the plastic piece to shove an ant trap in there. I've been wondering how little sugar ants have found their way in. This looks like the culprit area.

Wow is this a widespread problem? I’m going to report it on both of my trucks. My luck that it seems I got an exceptionally bad one :(
