2009 Traction Control stability control issue

Recommended Posts

Posted

When turning a corner in my FILs 2009 5.3 1500 2wd Z71 , the stability control/traction control light comes on periodically. I can see this if traction is lost, but FIL says it occassionaly happens on cruising, accelerating up to speeds of about 45mph. No CEL at all.

I have done new wires, plugs, K&N air cleaner and cleaned t body amd MAF with sensor safe cleaner about 5000 miles ago.

Battery/Alternator shows 13 to 14.3 volts while running.

Any suggestions, tests I can run to see whats happening and why, especially during straight line accelerating.

Thanks

Need to know what the code is causing it. I will say this, I have seen low brake fluid cause this due to when you turn the fluid pulls to the side making the sensor think that the system is low.

Go to your local parts store and check the history codes in the vehicle.

Or purchase you an inexpensive code reader.

Inexpensive code reader - https://amzn.to/2H0rymG

Code reader that will give you data. - https://amzn.to/2VDUzbs

(I bought one of these just to test it and see how it works. For $35 it was pretty nice. It even has good reviews.)

Make sure the air pressure is good in all tires also.

This can trigger stabilatrak.

I have a code reader and there are no codes. Only the Lights come on the dash for traction control/stability control when this happens.

I cleaned T body, Maf today.

It may not be a code in the ECM and the code reader may only look at ECM codes. If a light comes on the dash, a code is set in the vehicle some where.

As far as tires pressures. Tire pressure will not cause stabiltrak codes. It is a separate system

Thnx. I will take to to a dealership and see if they can scan it for free.. Or a truck shop I have local I can go to. Never been to them but all they do is trucks.

Sounds like the same light I have gotten when using my truck in snow and Ice. Since it is happening when turning and it is the traction control light, the truck is receiving a message that it has one tire spinning faster than another. I would check your sensors on the front and make sure they are good. If a securing point is broken the sensor can move outward and give a false reading. I dont know if they sell the sensor, but I know they come with new front hubs.

As talked about, hook up a code reader and go for a drive. They can monitor the sensors and see whats is going on.

Can the code reader read ABS codes?  Probably a hub.  Check wiring though on the offending wheel when you get the code.

Not most. But one that works really well and is worth a look at is the Blue Driver https://amzn.to/2ETFBs7.

It connects to your phone via bluetooth and does ABS and SIR codes. It's the only one I have found that checks those. A friend of mine has one and uses his Ipad with it. It is a decent tool if you don't want to payout the big bucks.

My scanner is using an app called Torque. I cant see anything that monitors the wheel sensor.. I guess I will have to have the dealership scan it for me.

Yeah unfortunately that's a powertrain only app. Do you have a local technical college around? I teach the automotive class here at our tech college and we are always looking for cars to scan and we have nicer equipment here than I have at the dealership I work at lol. That would be worth a shot before I went to the dealership and had them read the codes and charge you an hour diag. Just a suggestion. I would even buy the bluedriver and scan it myself before paying an hour at the dealership.

If it were a wheel speed sensor or a hub failure he would have an ABS light as well, not just a stabilitrac / traction light. I am thinking he has a C0561 but we need to figure out what module is sending out that code.
