Welcome to this forum! You are towing a significant weight but well within the capabilities of your truck.  I'd get my vehicle and trailer brakes checked.  Your issue may be mechanical.  I used to live many miles away from paved roads.  At the time, I'd only drive a manual which was heavily used when long steep hills were encountered.  Does the transmission in the one ton have options to hold in a lower gear?

Even in 1st gear truck just keeps gaining speed if im not standing on my brakes,trailer brakes are what saves me from cliff diving

FWIW, HDC  (Hill Descent Control) will only work between 1 and 14 mph.  

 

Should be able to set cruise at 25 mph or above. Of course touching the brakes disengages cruise. 

Not sure why you are finding you need to be at 40 mph to set it. 

 

Are you also using tow/haul mode?

It makes the exhaust brake more aggressive.

 

Are you leaving the transmission in auto?

Using manual mode prevents the exhaust brake from performing automatic downshifts to help maintain speed (but, of course in manual you can downshift it)

 

Exhaust brake only works when the torque converter is locked.

GM says lockup varies with speed, load and gear.

A Denali doesn’t have hill decent control??

On 2019 3500 Denali, Hill descent is  'included and only available with'  Z71, and Z71 is optional.

 

And,  Z71 is also not available with dual wheels. 

 

SRW Denali's that have Z71 added, do not get the Z71 front emblem. 

 

 

On 2020 3500 Denali JHD (Hill Descent) it is standard on SRW and not available with DRW

I have a 2019 3500 Denali SRW and I don't have hill decent on mine.  Also correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the exhaust brake is at all like the "Jake brake" I think it only down shifts the trans and uses the engines compression to slow down.  I think they just gave us advanced down shifting and marketed it as an "exhaust brake"

I use tow haul mode in auto.My torque converter will not kick in under 40 mph.i believe something is not right with this truck

I have a Chevy 3500HD diesel. I am in Colorado with a lot of steep downgrades. I pull a 17,000lb fifth wheel. I am new to all of this. I had been using the manual selection on steep downgrades......running usually in second gear. Now I just discovered I have an exhaust brake button I didn't know about. When this is engaged, and tow haul is on, do I leave the transmission in drive or still use manual to keep the truck from gaining too much speed?

Its an exhaust brake, not an engine brake.  A "Jake brake" is an engine brake, in where its mechanically closing the exhaust valves in the cylinder head.

 

These trucks use an exhaust brake, in there the turbocharger's VGT vanes can close up to increase exhaust pressure in the system to slow the truck down.

Drive.  It has the ability to request a downshift as necessary to maintain desired speed.

 

If you use M, that function will be defeated. 

 

The exhaust brake is more active with tow/haul engaged. 

 

It also pairs well with cruise conrol.

    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
