Had the muffler and flapper removed on my 2020 Custom Trail Boss. Love the sound!

No issues after a few days of driving. I drive a lot of highway to and from work, typically have my cruise set at 73-75. Cruising at that speed I can hear the exhaust slightly but am not getting any drone. When I'm on the gas or accelerating up hill, there is a slight amount of drone but nothing crazy. Haven't heard any backfiring when downshifting. I do have the AFM disabled so I'm using 8 cylinders all the time.

really no drone though?

Guess it depends on what you mean by drone.  Its audible when accelerating, quiet when coasting.  Amount of sound when accelerating is commensurate with how much gas your giving it.   Cruising at highway speed isn't very noticeable unless going uphill. Honestly though, the whole point is to make it louder -

drone is a hum or drone lol at cruising speeds (50-70). I've owned a lot of performance cars and bikes and typically to get the best acceleration rumble and no drone you have to pay. Drone didn't bother me at 24 with 2 12" subs bumping with friends all the time. But it does at 36 with coworkers, wife or just a podcast playing lol.

So it's interesting to hear it's possible with a cutout, which is something even borla can struggle with sometimes. That's why there are those who are skeptic.

If i owned and didn't lease I might make an appointment tomorrow to do this. Worst case I'm out $100 to try it and another $100 to undo it. That's still a shit ton cheaper than any aftermarket.

That was my thinking...  If I did the $100 mod and didn't like it, I could just jump in the truck and drive my happy a$$ down to Summit Racing and pick out a catback system and install it...

My 2018 sounds a bit deeper and louder than the 2019, but the 2018 has a definite drone whereas this one is nearly non-existent...

No it won’t set off any warning lights. I used HVAC aluminum tape on mine several months ago. Holding up just fine.

Thanks. I put a magnaflow on and turned around 5 min after i left and had them swap it out for a flowmaster 10 series. I was still very upset with the results as it was not much louder than stock. I went to the dealership to see what could be dont and all they said was order the CATback system they sell for $1500 and it would help it a little. I wasnt happy about eating $250 on the flowmaster install and definatly wasnt going to eat $1500 for probably the same sound i got according to them. So i got some muffler tape came home and taped all 3 holes up. I am happy now. Would loke more sound but this will due until my warranty runs out and at thatbpoint il probably have the shop cut thenpipe off and put on something without the resionators. Thanks for the info it helped.

You will find if you experiment with covering the resonator mesh screens it will dramatically change the sound.  My magnaflow was very quiet too. I currently have the middle resonator mesh on each side only uncovered and I think it’s the best sound so far.
Muffler tape works great. Cut it to the shape and stick it on. So far it has stuck great and it doesn’t look like a hack job.

Any drone from that setup with only the middle resonator uncovered? I’m trying to add a little more tone on mine. I have a Borla Pro XS muffler on mine and still left the “flapper” valve to reduce the noise on the highway especially when DFM is not running all cylinders. But heard that some covered all of them and gets drone and others playing around with the combination of it.

How’s the sound with cruising speeds? I’m thinking about doing the muffler tape too but heard it’s a pain to take off if I don’t like the sound. I’m not looking for something loud. My Borla muffler now is decent and louder than stock but only when you step on it. Just want to squeeze a little more with no drone.

It dies off becouse of the ACM so its not bad. The muffler ibgot was supposed to be annoying loud but without the tape i couldnt even tell. I started with covering 1 screen at a time. I mqy have got a little ambitious by covering them all up though. I may remove 1 of the tapes. I dont have drone, and like ibsaid its not annoying at highway speeds.

What makes you want to remove some? And what’s ACM, not familiar with that term

AFM sorry. I just noticed how bad my post was. The active Fuel Management system. It drops it from an 8 cylinder to 4 to save gas. I want to remove one of the tapes just to drop the noise a little. It doesnt sound so great when ideling through the neighborhood or around 35mph. Its probably becouse of the flowmaster 10 series i put on it. Here is a clip of it. Put headphones on for the actual sound. Inread that you can delete the AFM or bypass it but the dealer didnt recomend it. Not sure how much gas it actually saves.

That sounds good. Any pics of the tape on the tailpipe and brand/type you used?

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
