flush/clean out engine thoroughly.  Start with fresh oil to the top of line on stick.  Check every week same location after setting overnight.  Make a determination from that point on what or how much oil consumption you really have before doing a ring job?

Agreed. But 6.0 quarts of engine oil (with an oil filter chenge) as specified in the capacities in the owner’s manual puts the oil level approximately 1/4 quart above the full dimple/crosshatched area on the oil dipstick.

Probably so?  For whatever reason any manual that says i.e. 6,7.5,8,9.5qts etc.etc. After flushing motor thoroughly replace with OIL up to top of line most engines take 1/2 qt less than what it calls for to reach line.  Always, underfill on capacity 1/2 qt take reading instead of just dumping what manual says 9/10 it will be over top line.

To get this overfill reading are you checking the oil after it sits on level ground overnight?

If so this is normal.

Check it at running temp on level ground. Shut it off when buying gas and when done filling gas tank check it.

When cold before startup, such as when the truck has been parked all night, it is approximately 1/4 quart overfull on the dipstick when the owners-manual-specified 6.0 quarts of oil are inserted at oil change with a new PF48 or equivalent size oil filter.  After reaching normal (210F on the gauge) operating temperature, and shutting off for a few minutes, such as when fueling, and then checking, the level is at the 'full' line on the dipstick.  2 GM service managers said this is normal and correct.
