I’m facing overheating on my 2014 1500 GMC Sierra 180k kilometers (around 120k miles) with the LT engine on idle only

so when the car is running temperature goes back to normal.

I have tried to troubleshoot the cooling system and nothing is faulty, the coolant is flowing regularly which means water pump and thermostat are functioning good, fans are functioning as well, the coolant was changed 30k miles ago

Any help?

thanks

You could have a air pocket. But also I would swap out the thermostat anyways. And you say the fans work but they are a speed regulated system so without a scanner it is impossible to know at what % they run at.

What is the coolant level in the fill tank? My radiator had a hairline crack and the level in the fill tank would gradually lower. I could see if the level in the tank gets low enough you could overheat.

Could be a partially plugged radiator.

I would have changed the coolant earlier.

Feel the rad. hoses when its idling.

The bottom hose should be cooler if the rad. is good I believe.

I'm thinking air pocket as well. They are a common problem with these capless radiators. The old way to "burp" the system was to fill the radiator and overflow tank, and start the vehicle. As it warms up, keep filling at the radiator until the level stabilizes, then top off the overflow tank.

Now? Fill it the best you can and drive it around until your temp gauge stops acting wonky.

Little late but maybe you figured it out already cause I’m having the same issue actually. Just scanned it last night and no codes at all popped up but when driving the gauge just takes off running to 245-260. I’ve bought the tool to vacuum the hoses and then when releasing the other end is in a 5gal bucket full of coolant to assure no air is going in. I changed the water pump, temp sensor, and thermostat TWICE hoping one was a boo-boo part. Charged the AC and for about 3 days ran great ice cold. But then no more AC. However, ran great for about a month without overheating. Cruised perfect at 210 but then all of a sudden notice gauge ran past 210 checked under the hood when pulled over and saw coolant was nearly empty from the reserve tank. So now I’m back to square one. Did you figure out the issues yet ? I hope so

2014 sierra 5.3. Went on a small trip yesterday (1 hour) came back home today and didn’t notice anything weird. Went to the gas station and came back home and fans stayed on after I killed the truck. I thought it was weird but shrugged it off. Later took a trip to the store and I don’t think it did it again, but when I was coming back home I got a notification that my ac was going to be shut off due to engine overheating. So I looked at the gauge and sure enough it’s above 260. So, I pull over and sit. Fans running, I pop the hood and everything seems normal and can be, coolant same level as the day I filled it up. Had a check engine light but no reader, so I let the temp go back down to operating temp and drove back home (less than a mile), and it wanted to start overheating again but got home before it did.

So, that brings me here. Also, I’m not sure how important this is but… About 2 months ago I was leaking coolant really bad and found that the reservoir had been cracked at the bottom. Ok, easy fix. Took the air box off and disconnected the MAF sensor to get to the bolts. Somewhere in the process the MAF sensor got coolant into the wiring I believe because after I was done installing the new reservoir, I turned the truck on and the fans were on overdrive. I cleared the code and all was fine I figured it had dried out by now. The other day I had to change a headlight bulb. Took the air box out once again disconnecting the sensor and it did run the fans in overdrive and give me a check engine light. So I cleared the code, went on the trip mentioned above and all was great.

any ideas?
