4L60E Question

Hello al!

 

I have a random question and hoping you all might be able to answer it. I have a 2008 Silverado 5.3 with the 4L60E in it. Truck only has 36,XXX miles on it. I used to have a 2004 Silverado with the 4.8 and 4L60E in it that was junk. Had it rebuilt at 80,000 miles and it started slipping again around 120,000.

 

So my question is are the newer 4L60’s any better or improved over the older ones?

They are better, they were later updated to be called the 4L65 and the 6.0s in the 1500s got the 4L70s until they went with the 6-speeds.

 

That being said, folks still upgrade and tune them for better performance and increased durability.

I have the RPO M30 which means it’s just a 4l60e right? Not a 65?

That's correct.  The 4L65 is M32.

GM was upgrading the valve/body a bit over time in the 4l60e. You might want to invest in a completely upgraded valve / body and new separator plate. Easy to access and replace.

Guess I just got lucky on my 4L60.  260,000 miles, still original, still shifts perfectly, and I abused that thing so much towing heavy stuff that it's on its fourth rear end.  2001 Suburban, now owned by a friend.  Original engine, too.

Where might I be able to find a quality valve body and plate?

given that gm starting using the 4l60e around '93, and stopped around '12 (and only in a few models after '08), and that yours (assuming it hasn't been swapped) is from '08, I wouldn't expect big improvements in the internal components, and I wouldn't just be swapping parts in without knowing if they also need other components changed to work properly (assuming there is actually a valve body that is newer/improved from the one in your '08).

 

From some googling, I found this:

so there is an updated valve body, but it also needs other parts to work properly.  Sounds like it also has the TCM programmed differently, to produce new error conditions that may occur...

Nothing in the newest iteration of valve body will benefit the older trans. The changes outlined in davesters link won't benefit any older versions of the 4L** transmissions. All the important stuff was last upgraded in around the 2003 model year, IIRC. Bottom line, assuming you keep your truck stock, is to maintain it regularly and don't go beyond it's abilities (and overheat the transmission, for example) and it'll last a long time.
