1979 k20 fleetside Cheyenne fuel sending unit

After I filled my one of my gas tanks. The fuel now reads way past full and doesn't move to just under half a tank until it's bone dry. Do I need to replace the sending unit and if so do i need to remove the truck box to do so?  Or Is there any tricks to resolve issue?  I seen a you tube video where a guy used a magnet to move the fuel gauge needle to correct location?
