I see a lot of anecdotal evidence and opinion in this thread but not a lot of facts. I see a lot of personal attacks, name calling and unnecessary disrespect of other's thoughts and opinions but not a lot of science. (it's an open forum, I get it)

What I don't see, unless I missed it and if I did I apologize, are any facts or science that indicate the engineers that designed these vehicles are wrong in their break-in guidance. They apparently feel so strongly about it they are starting to use technology to force compliance (see Corvette story linked earlier).

So I respectfully ask, factually speaking, what is the downside to complying with the manufacturer's suggested break in period? Based on facts and science, what's the advantage of ignoring this guidance?

Again, I apologize If I missed the science based factual responses in this thread. They must have gotten lost in all the clutter.

JWRJR:

This threads theme "Break In" is like the "Oil and Filter" threads "OCI" and "Catch Can" threads; dozens of them each. I see you're a newer member. 10/30/2020 so let me do you the favor of explaining how the game of Whack O' Mole is played here.

?

Proof has been offered in the form of SAE tech papers or Doctoral Thesis, Patent papers, Industrial Research, Military Research all of which can be bought or is in the public domain. People with decades of R&D in a relevant field, 3rd and 4th year college students, post grads in the field of study, professors and teachers are members of these forums.

Finding proof is not the problem. Proof is the Mole raising his head. Then the remainder of the tread is taken up with opinion offered as facts/truth that dismiss the proof with nothing more than the relentless hammering of their WILL.

About the 10th thread on on a topic they just skip straight to the hammering until the truth submits and is no longer offered.

Many valuable resources have simply quit offering. Some have left the community. A large number sit in the weeds watching the few that are still willing take the beating of the Trolls, fearful. And rightly so! Those that asked the questions are so confused they don't know what to believe and have been bludgeoned to the point they no longer respond to the reasonable and rational. They no longer are able to hear the "ring of truth".

But they will still cry out when someone calls a Troll a Nimrod.

Remember the story of Noah?

Even God has a limit to his patents.

Can you deliver the perfection you demand?

**********************************************************************************************

Now about your question.

Your question (highlighted in the quote) is one solved by rational thought.

 Factually speaking of course.

Ask yourself that question out loud in a mirror and observe.

It will come to you.

Go to the Technical and Advanced section.

Then Practical Filtration and Lubrication.

Your question is the study of wear and tribology.

Seems people have to prove it to themselves before they will believe it.

Do you know who Stacy David is? He’s not a name caller either. Usually someone who is credible doesn’t resort to name calling or gets their panties in a wad. They just laugh and move on.

Oooh, I know the answer to this one, he is a man with two first names, and is still rocking a modified mullet?

You can twist my words...edit the post all you like.

What you can't do is name a single person I called a name.

What I did do was throw a rock into a dog pound.

The dog the rock hit is the only one that yelped.

Only one that ever does.

I remember my first car. A Mazda RX3. I had my permit my father drove it home. My mother followed with her 73 Buick Rivera. The salesman said keep it under blah blah RPMs. He race a guy at the first light. It took my mother 20 minutes longer than us to get home. We went to 4 other uncles, brothers they had their turn. Speed shifting, redlining. Then the first week he drove it until I got my license. Later when I went to work for him. The guys all told me stories about lining up with him. I pretty much and everyone I know drive their rides from day one normal, meaning like they are going to. Saying that I’m not saying anyone should do that. You want to drive the highway at 50 mph during break in, do it. You’re ride. I don’t call people names doing what they do. I give my experience, I don’t dictate, like some. Or call people idiots. Some people will call some manufacturers advice as gospel when it suits them. Not when it doesn’t. I go by experience. And pass it on.

I like the story, but didn't the RX3 come with a Wankel (rotary engine)? That thing was burning oil without the engine even running brand new.

Mine didn’t. Did change it every 3K back then. Went through points and plugs every 4K miles. Drove the dog out of it. Maybe that’s why it didn’t use oil. It was never driven easy. One transmission and rear by 60K miles. Traded it in for a 74 barracuda. I was a tad easier on it.

Did not know they had a conventual engine in them.

Friend had a little 2 door coupe with the (I think 1.3 Wankel) in high school. Fun car to drive, think the red line was around 9000 RPM, it was like driving a motorcycle.

Wankels are different from conventional engines. Iirc, if you didn't drive them the oil seals would dry up. Had down the road and the engine is toast. I saw many RX7s that sat in a garage during the winter and had the engine rebuilt during the summer. I believe this issue was fixed on the RX8.

I always wanted an RX8 so I could mod it for racing. Not cheap to build, which is why I didn't get one. Couldn't afford it.

So, you had one of these two versions in the first car: 10A: capacity 982cc with twin spark plugs and twin distributors producing 109hp @ 7,000rpm and 96lb/ft of torque. 12A: capacity 1,146cc with twin spark plugs and twin distributors producing 125hp.

This was in the final run in the USA: 12B: capacity 1,146cc with single spark plugs and distributor producing 130hp with 115lb/ft torque.

12B in a very light RX3 coup. 2and gear around 70 third gear around 115. I did about 130 twice. The doors would start rattling and it felt like it was going airborne. At 17 I was stupid and fearless. The fools at high school would try to outrun me. When I had my 74 barracuda it was done at 115. I had bragging rights at high school. Last day of my junior year one of my racing bodies brought his dads Grand Prix. It could hang.

I’m kinda like @KARNUT  in regards to break in. Every vehicle I have owned whether it’s been motorcycles, jet-skis, boat, cars, suvs, and trucks. I have driven them hard from the get go.
My jet ski and boat I let it warm up for about an hour and let if fly. Both jet skis have over 150 hours on them and still perform like brand new. My boat runs awesome and will run even better when the engine swap of a 350 Mag is dropped in.

My 2019 High Country, first thing I did was find out if it was quicker than my tuned 2018 Sierra. I mashed that pedal to the floor, told salesman to hang on and the smile on his face was priceless. It’s got over $13k miles on it and (yes it’s not a lot) but runs awesome. Compared to some unfortunate guys on this forum who have unpleasantly experienced the valve spring failures and other things, ect...

Too each their own. Break it in the way you feel most comfortable, (stay away from keeping it in the redlines though!!?)

MY OPINION is I believe GM puts it in the owners manual to cover themselves from “fools” who redline the heck out of it and takes out the engine.  It’s kinda like this new house I’m thinking of purchasing. They have an HOA and most of it is hogwash/lipstick on a pig just to cover themselves in case some “fool” comes in and tries to mess up the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, this forum is littered with “so called gentlemen” with fixed mindsets and can’t take anyone else’s OPINION respectfully!  So one guy in general comes to mind and he goes on internet crazed copy, cut, paste “quote” sprees in funky italics and bold letters, also centered in the middle of the page to make himself feel important, seem intelligent, and be the center of attention, because he is obviously not getting enough of it within his own household.

Have a fantastic weekend. Can’t wait for this snow to go away. Need the sun!

Yes sir, knew that, was trying to figure out if the RX3 ever came with anything other that a variant of the Wankel.

1 rotor, or 2, were the versions I remember. Single plug, single distributor, and a two plug, two distributor set up.

Man, I have taken this thread way off course....
