GM diagnostic procedure seems to indicate they are taking the position that it is a characteristic of the new (for 2020) fan drive.  

 

Kinda like the their position on the typewriter tick.

It'll be interesting to see if this thumping sound gets louder or something breaks.

Some 2020 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks equipped with the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine (RPO L5P) may have a thumping or knocking sound coming from the rear of the engine. The sound is often more pronounced in the interior of the truck as it’s amplified by the transmission bell housing.

To duplicate the engine sound:

  • Idle the engine at about 600 RPM with the transmission in Park or Neutral. The engine oil temperature should be 113–185°F (45–85°C).
  • Turn the HVAC fan and radio off.
  • Remove the accessory drive auxiliary belt. (Fig. 14)

 

If the noise level is significantly reduced, it should be considered a normal characteristic of the 2020 model year truck. No additional repairs are necessary.

Use the following procedure for accessory drive auxiliary belt removal, testing and installation:

  1. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  2. Remove intake air duct.
  3. Separate the charge air cooler (CAC) tube and position aside.
  4. Remove the belt and position aside.
  5. Install the CAC tube.
  6. Loosely place the air box and intake duct back in place. (So a DTC is not set for the sensor when starting.)
  7. Start the engine and verify the sound is gone.
  8. Remove the loosely installed air box and intake duct.
  9. Separate the CAC tube.
  10. Install the belt.
  11. Install the CAC tube.
  12. Install the air box and duct.

 

TIP: Do not run the vehicle more than three minutes without the auxiliary belt installed. Do not raise the RPM higher than idle with the belt removed.

The engine sound has no short- or long-term effects on the engine.

I was going to do this, but...I see 3 problems?  1) The belt shown above is the fan belt. 2) The accessory drive belt runs off the crank pulley as well. 3) How could you safely get either safely out of the way without taking the fan out?

 

Am I missing something?

Honestly I havn't even looked at it. Just noticed it on the tech link and thought I'd share. Surely there is a way.

Yea take it to the dealer and let them do that procedure and have you verify the noise.

I was listening carefully yesterday to mine and it is making the same noise as from the video in another thread.  Doesn't seem that bad to me, but I have never had a diesel before.  To me on the best day it still makes a lot of unhealthy sounding clanking and rattling noises in general, so I just chalk it up to "normal".  Allow me to sip some more GM koolaid.  :)  

 

Looking at the belt diagram, it appears to me the fan belt is outside belt.  That is the one that is making the noise, it's the new part for 2020.  Note they call it the "accessory drive auxiliary belt ".  It should be easy enough to slip the belt off and secure it to the fan to keep it out of the way while the engine is started.  You just have to keep it clear of the crank pulley and the other accessory drives.  I do agree with newdude, just let the dealer do it for you if in doubt.

I still keep looking for anything on this from GM, nothing. I did come across something other than the belt removal. I was watching part of the banks videos on YTUBE. The oil cooler is bigger with more cooling coils and its on the back of the engine. I'm not saying that is what it is but it is a new part put on the 20's. I have been looking at what the differences are and what could be making the noise. I started to think that cold oil going thru the cooler may not make the noise till it warms up and makes it till it cools down. Till its cold again and I don't get it when its cold. I will think things thru, that is till I either give up of find the issue. I have emailed a few places with questions and ideas and most of the time I get nothing in return????

I said quite a while ago that I think it is the EGR valve / pump.  It is definitely loudest there when you listen to different components with a mechanic's stethoscope. I emailed Banks a long time ago with the question - no response.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
