I am so lucky to be in a community with exceptionally low numbers of cases and the majority of people respecting the safety of others. I believe the two are not a coincidence.  I walk my dog daily in a beautiful forested off-leash park.  Few wear masks in the trails but people keep plenty of distance from each other.  On Wednesday, I must have been approaching a couple too quickly because the man called out, "Six feet, please".  I thanked him even though I wouldn't have passed within six feet of him on my uncorrected course.  Unfortunately the evening news often highlights altercations resulting  those types of comments.  For this reason many are reluctant to speak out in support of safety but  I like to believe most will appreciate knowing you care.  A few months ago I wrote a letter to the editor in support of masks and still receive appreciative comments.   I know Covid19 precautions are a hot button item for some.  I feel so much freer in an environment where all are following the basic and effortless protocols.  (I too would be against masks if I believed they were analogous to a diaper. ?  They truly are an effortless accessory to use when properly selected and used.)   Covid19 protocols enable me to do everything I did pre Covid19.  Yesterday I opted for an office visit with my Doctor over a telephone visit.   I felt much, much safer visiting his office than pre pandemic!  I hope crowded waiting rooms never come back and phone visits remain an option.  Today we are going Christmas shopping at a large shopping mall. We need to mail all of our presents so early shopping is required.   Temperature is taken at all entrances and masks are required in the mall.  Each store follows strict protocols.   I am actually more excited about Christmas shopping than I have been for years!

Surgery went well. A lot more hardware than expected. Prognosis is good. She's loopy and I'm running on empty. Huge turnout of support is keeping us treading water. Food. We got food Equipment galore.

Long Covid some are calling it. Doesn't really have a name yet. The disease that comes after the infection to the heart, lungs and circulatory system. Saw it on TV yesterday. A guest Doctor on Rachel Ray's show. The slides of heart and lung tissue, before and after where something akin to the ones they showed in high school for smoking in health class. It affects people of ALL ages and groups and like smoking it differs from person to person. 

 

I wear my mask. I wash my hands. I carry a bottle of hand sanitizer and use it and keep distance. I also limit my time out. Now some people may think I am a prisoner but I'll take the freedom from sickness in trade even if it isn't guaranteed my odds improve greatly. Freedom of a clean conscience knowing I haven't harmed anyone. Freedom to find sanctuary in my home. I like my freedoms. Think I'll keep them. None of these freedoms have a constitutional guarantee. Now ain't that grand?

It’s amazing that a man in his 70s can get it. Within a few days is back at it. Like most things in life people are affected differently. My life with covid is back to normal. Most people I know are back to normal. I’m so thankful that I live in the part of the country where you can choose the way you want to deal with covid. I take the over the counter aids to help prevent covid. Already have spoken with my GP about what’s available if I get covid. I’m free to choose without restrictions the meds of my choice. I carry and wear a mask where required. I believe there’re of little help. In the wacky world we live in where the perception being reality. I comply. I lived under-fear in the beginning. Not anymore.

My comments are a personal reflection on how I'm coping with Covid19, particularly with the extra time that comes with the restrictions. I believe that if I'm not part of the solution, I'm part of the problem which is why I like to share my more positive experiences.  The pandemic is great fodder for politics but my behaviors are a result of me doing my part for my personal safety and my respect for others. I appreciate reading how others are adjusting their behaviors in an effort to keep body and mind healthy during this very real pandemic.

I hear you. Same in my area. People choosing and most just back to normal life. Obviously some places require masks because of a corporate decision. I like my freedom, my freedom to choose, my freedom to live how I see best. The reason this whole thing still has so many freaked out is because of media and the way the numbers and statistics are looked at. If the information was actually looked at by people then they would know its just not as terrifying as the media makes it out to be. Also the mask thing. Its for self protection to a point and that's it. The whole, (its to protect others), was just something they came up with to try and get everyone to wear it to protect themselves because they knew people wouldn't. So they tried to go with the whole, you might not care about yourself but atleast help others, with an outcome of them wearing a mask to actually protect themselves. Anyways, its good to hear you are making your choice to live life how you see fit.

I fear getting off topic but you give an interesting response to Grump's comment.  You do wear a seatbelt to protect yourself as well as your friends and family.  (I will add consideration to first responders to my list of reasons for wearing a seatbelt.)   I was driving when seatbelts became mandatory and the resistance amongst my buddies had a lot of parallels to the arguments against masks.   There were passionate pleas about freedom of choice  and arguments galore about being tied up in an accident preventing escape to being cut in half  at the waist on impact  The graphic  scenes of crashes with and without seatbelts makes seatbelt requirements easy to accept.   Seeing a stranger on a ventilator (or worse) from Covid19 is a harder leap to accept the need for ppe's.   I have not spent any waking hours on a ventilator but have spent enough hours at the bedside of others to know its worth the effort to  do what I can to keep healthy for myself, my wife, my children, grandkids and friends.  I understand your comment but your personal safety protects many.

One of my favorite covid pastimes is typing a state and Covid in my browser. In doing that I find Texas, Florida, Mississippi Louisiana and California are close to the same. Some are closed down somewhat others partial ones completely open. Some places are spiking for the first time. Weird.

One of my favorite pastimes is watching cases go up in multiple areas but the amount hospitalized doesn't correlate. Its almost like majority will not have symptoms and if they do its like the sniffles, oh wait that is correct. How about majority of deaths is because of already having comorbidities. I also agree with a lot of the experts that say 50% of the entire US population has or have had the virus but will never know.

It reminds of what a politician said the other day. You will be able to guess who said it.

One of the reasons this pandemic has provided me additional free time is my shopping trips are much more focused and less frequent.  Today we found some Christmas goodies to send our Texas grandchildren and I was left with substantial quality time on my motorcycle.  Since early spring, the mileage on my bike has surpassed the total of my last three riding seasons combined!

      I will be doing that for sure, but I need to solve who has/ where I can find a bidirectional scan tool that will support OBD 1.5. I'm kicking myself because I ebay'ed a Snap On MT2500 that I didn't think I'd ever need anymore. D'oh!! I'd rather not buy another, so I'll contact a few local shops to see if they have one and how much they'd want to do the procedure. I'd rather have the ability to do it myself... I wish there was a modern tool that could do it all, but I'd have no idea what to buy.   The theory with the pulled timing is that it mimics a rich condition. The delayed spark causes incomplete burn and the O2 sensor picks up low oxygen levels. That's interpreted as a rich condition so the PCM pulls fuel and that shows up in the deeply negative fuel trims.

      There's a bunch of tea leaves that you've read, but in any case the delayed timing is unusual. Not sure how that relates to the rich at idle vs. 'normal' while driving.   If you're in this deep, might be worth investigating, and re-learning the sensor. What have you got to lose? Plus, it properly fixes the timing cover leak.

      Injector is being sent off today for rebuild and I estimate I'll have it back in 10 days or so.   It may not be the injector...of course...now that I've torn down the intake again. But, let's rule out the injector and replace those spider legs that have been almost rubbed through.   The truck has always had negative timing and I'm reading "normal" timing at warm idle should be +16 or so. I'm negative 16 to 25 or more, and it's always been like that since I bought it.   A light turned on upstairs last night in the old noggin. Rare, I know...   This will be wild, if it turns out to be the cause!   In 2001, according to the old service documentation, the muffler was replaced. Why? I have no idea, it wouldn't have been rusted through by then. But they did a crappy job.   In 2019, another shop replaced it and noted the prior install was poorly done on the work order. "Exhaust system vibrates on crossmember". Except...I guess they just left it be? I believe the husband, the couple who were original owners, had passed by then. Maybe she said it's just not worth it to have the exhaust system fixed and declined repairs. Very few miles were driven between 2019 and 2025.   The exhaust system vibrates heavily on the crossmember and you can feel it and REALLY hear it, even today. Not always, but at idle, it gets going pretty good sometimes.   What if....   ....What if that's enough to trigger one or both of the knock sensors? Could it be tricking the sensors into sensing knock, so it's pulling timing aggressively? Pulling timing heavily means it's firing after the piston reaches full height which means incomplete burn which means the O2 sensor is sensing a rich condition, which means I've been chasing my tail, and what I thought was an inconsequential problem (janky exhaust) has been THE issue for this truck for 25 solid years?   That would be wild. Maybe it IS wild.   The service documentation thereafter, for years, shows visits for rough idle, replacing O2's, replacing the cat, replacing plugs and wires, a misfire condition, like they could never solve the issue. The injector has been replaced 4 times in 80k miles, that's just crazy.   The secondary theory....   The engine has clearly had a leak at the front seal for a very long time (the greasy trench...). I think the truck changed hands quickly ~2025 because there's Napa receipts from someone I don't recognize in the ownership history. They apparently replaced the timing cover seal, and they did a terrible job. There's RTV smeared all over and the leak I had reduced to a weep by snugging the front oil pan bolts is now a leak again.   HOWEVER....I read about replacing the crankshaft position sensor. Any time the ckp sensor is disturbed or timing cover is removed, the truck requires relearning, and that can only be done through a bi-directional scan tool. Skippy with the RTV probably didn't do the relearn procedure is my guess. His scan tool is lost in a pile of RTV goo somewhere.   So, it's very possible the sensor has been disturbed and the truck is just running on the old learn data but not setting a code for anything. The distributor has since been replaced and so has the camshaft position sensor, so all bets are off for that thing.   In the theme of one step forward, two steps back, I returned the accumulator for the AC. The gal I've been working with at O'Really's has been great. She refunded it under manufacturer's defect and we compared it to the replacement I ordered, and sure enough, the replacement is machined very differently (and a gauge actually fits on it!).   Got it home, installed it, started vacuuming it down.... and I couldn't get good vacuum.   The high side service port, where I replaced the old GM ball valve suspecting that was a source of the previous leak....well, I've clearly exposed whatever pre-existing crack in the line where the service port is welded, and made it much worse. Blessing in disguise? Except there goes another $25, now I'm waiting for a replacement AC line.   In 10-ish days ALL the parts will be here. Rebuilt injector, new exhaust system, new cat, new high pressure AC line.   Oh, did I mention the squeaking ISN'T coming from the AC pump? The truck still squeaks when started, and there were words after I started it with the new AC pump installed. But, there was more to replacing the AC pump for just a squeak. A truck with good working AC is something of value, for the comfort alone.   I've ordered a new harmonic balancer because, 30 years is a good run for one of those. Rule it out. The squeak may be something more sinister, though. I'm worried about that ckp sensor and if it was shimmed correctly, or if the timing set was installed correctly. The squeak may be coming from UNDER the timing cover.   At this point, once I get it put back together, I'm thinking I'll take a 50 mile victory lap and then promptly put it up for sale. This truck is cursed. Betty, from beyond the grave, doesn't want anyone messing with her Blazer. Or maybe she's getting revenge for 30 years of shop visits with that thing.
