I owned a 19 with the 6.2L and now a 20 with the the 3L Duramax.

Here's the simple of it:

6.2L beast of an engine. Fast as hell. Sucks fuel.  Did I mention it SUCKS FUEL? And likes premium on top of that.

3.0L Sweet smooth diesel and only sips fuel compared to the 6.2.  Not obnoxiously loud.  Only downside, DEF.

So, unless you're holeshotting every light. Racing other folks up the highway, the diesel is king.  Tows pretty much the same amount and less visits to the gas station.

Are you sure it tows the same as the 6.2? I though max tow on the diesel was < 10,000 pounds. 6.2 is more than 12,000?

Thats pretty extensive knowledge about an engine that just came out.

Yeah I guess we’ll find out...

Here’s a write up on the full-size duramax

Almost no one gets the max tow package.  Standard models are in the 9200 to 9500 range

If you're towing over 10,000lbs, you should have a 2500. IMO

Lets not forget that nearly everything you do t the diesel will be more expensive, fuel, fuel filters, def not even required on the 6.2, most filters are more for a diesel application. But I have a little commuter car that is diesel, great torque and milage, just like the little Dmax in the Sierra.

In my neck of the woods, diesel is 2.55ish and premium is 3.10ish ...  The 6.2L wants premium AND gets 25-40% worse mileage.  I think the trade-off is well justified in favor of the diesel.

At that price, I might agree. Down here diesel is about 30 to 40 cents more than premium.

Wow, appreciate all the replies. I have to say I am leaning towards the 3.0 but actually having a hard time finding one optioned how I want. I just don't want to end up in a 6.2 with 33s getting worse mpg that my current 5.3.

I encourage you to do the math to see how much money you'll spend per month/year in fuel.  Maybe that will be the deciding factor.

3.0L with TB lift and 33" tires should average 23-25mpg depending on your commute and driving style.

Hopefully some of the 6.2L guys will chime in with their real world MPGs or I'm sure it's been extensively covered in one of the other threads.

Had many trucks with all sorts of configurations. Last truck was an L5P Duramax so a little different than your situation. Loved the long range of the diesel on a trip and the strong smooth power. That truck was by far the best road trip vehicle I have ever owned.  I also grew up on a farm so there was just something special about a diesel and the sound of a spooling turbo that made you feel good when you drove it.  Hated the expensive maintenance and DEF (old DEF is a PITA). Sold my camper so need for a 2500.  These new trucks have smaller fuel tanks and diesels like longer trips. Can’t put around town for just a few miles...regeneration (regen) won’t like that.  For me right now the 6.2 is better for my needs and no stress about my truck reducing MPH because of an emission issue  out in BFE (less common now).  My advice...evaluate your driving needs and then go test drive them both.

I’m kinda in the same situation as the op. I will be buying a travel trailer in the future. My local dealer had a truck with the equipment I wanted but it was a baby Duramax. I was looking for a 6.2. I took the diesel out for a test drive. And it’s nice. Lots of torque just about anywhere in the power band. It’s really quiet. But. I just couldn’t talk myself into buying a totally new engine design. Especially first year edition. So. I ordered a 6.2. Which by now I have absolutely no clue when it’s going to be made. Good luck in your decision.

The 10-speed makes a difference.

Has anyone been able to find a LT or RST with the 6.2L and Max Trailering package?! Seems to be a damn unicorn for me and I’m torn between that or a baby diesel with the Z71 off road package..any help is appreciated. Trying to find the new best tow rig for my Hallett 240 and somewhat daily driver out in SoCal [emoji1360]

Totally agree, can’t short trip current day diesels. They need to work or you’ll be put to work repairing them haha

Too bad you are in Southern California. I’ve seen LT and RST with 6.2l and max tow packages in the Northeast region. Specifically New England area.

Which dealers? I’ll travel or ship it out west!!
