For the record, the IOS entertainment system is listed as standard equipment on the Trail Boss package, my truck has the SD reader in the center console, and the build sheet for my 2019 Trail Boss says it has the IOS entertainment package. So there is no question that I should be able to add the factory navigation to my truck.

As a side note, I have tried and for a wide variety of reason do not like any of the current Apple CarPlay / Android Auto solutions. So while some may disagree with my objective here to add OEM nav to my truck (and might even in a futile effort feel compelled to try to change my mind right here on this thread), my mind is made up and I want the factory navigation feature on my truck.

As many others with this same configuration on this forum have done, I surfed to my favorite authorized online GM part houses, keyed in my VIN, and confirmed that the "IOS Nav Upgrade Kit" "fits your car". Being confident that I could follow the trail blazed by others on this forum, I pulled the trigger and ordered one.

Unfortunately, that is where my problem starts.

When I contacted my relatively new metro-Atlanta dealership (let's call them dealership #1) to arrange to have the vehicle flashed, I was not surprised that they were unaware that it was possible to upgrade my truck. So I provided them the link to this forum showing how it was commonly done, and the link to the authorized GM part house showing that "IOS Nav Upgrade Kit" "fits your car".

After a considerable amount of time, dealership #1 eventually came back and said that they had contacted GM and that it was not possible to upgrade the IOS entertainment system in my truck, and they further explained that GM did not want the liability of supporting these upgrades and suggested I look at the gm-navigation.com aftermarket product as an alternative. When I looked at the suggested alternative, it appeared that all they are doing was flashing the GM module, convincing me that maybe I needed a second GM opinion.

Enter dealership #2.

Dealership #2 is part of a large national dealership group. Certainly, I thought, they should know how this is done, and on the remote chance that they didn't, they should certainly have GM connections that dealership #1 might not have had. So I reached out to them, and it was no surprise when they responded back almost immediately that yes it could be done, stating "If the code came with it, we should be able to program it. The cost to do it, is $243.95, that includes the $100.00 that GM charges us for the Download. We would need the vehicle for 4 hours."

However when I asked for some detail about the "the code", they replied rescinding their earlier statement stating that "... there is NO Upgrading of a Factory Radio to add Navigation! I checked with our Parts Department and they confirmed this as well. I don’t think even going aftermarket, if you can get the Navigation to work, I believe you lose some of the functions of the Radio."

So here I am. Has some type of edict been handed down from GM? Hopefully, some GM tech out there can shed some light on this very confusing situation.

Just for future readers, this is incorrect. LT Trail Boss comes standard with IOR. You need Convenience Package II in order to get IOS.

Do you actually have the IOS radio?  Can you either pm me or post the last 8 of your VIN number?

If so, GM did have a nav upgrade but they have discontinued it.  You can still get it, p/n 84531832 you just have to find a dealer that has one or can still get it.  GM still is supporting the install as far as I know too.

Yep IOS (just wanted to make sure lol).  And if I read your original post correct again, I assume you have in your possession the GM upgrade kit p/n 84531832 ?  If you do, it will have the SD card and an authorization code sheet in the package.  A dealer would then call GM Techline with that authorization code, and then GM will make a calibration file for any necessary modules that have to be reprogrammed, in the case of 84531832, its typically the IPC (the cluster) and the radio.  Dealer can find the instructions in GM Service information, doc id 4858827.  Its titled "Navigation Data Card Package Installation (Instruction ID: 84190854)."

If you don't have the 84531832 kit, you will need to get one.

I do know that 2020 folk are out of luck as there is like 10 of the 2020 # in stock nationwide and it too is discontinued by GM.  We did a 2020 last November and it was a smooth install, except for the fact that we had to wait 2 days to get the calibration files as GM didn't have the 2020 ones ready yet.

What was the part number for the 2020?  Any idea why they are doing away with the upgrade?

84489271.  Not sure their reasoning for dropping it.

The good news is that the 2019 GM upgrade kit p/n 84531832 is still available (more than 100 in stock), and suburban Detroit dealership #3 confirmed that they can get it to me in one business day. The bad news is that while dealership #3 indicates that they know how to do it, have done it multiple times, and would love to do it for me, they indicate that for some unknown reason, GM is now saying that this part is incompatible with my VIN - even though their own online VIN checker says that it is compatible. It may be a technical issue, or a marketing position, but either way they don't know why GM is taking this position and are not willing to take any chances.

So now that all three dealerships have taken the same position on this, have I struck out, or is there a GM tech out there that can shed some light on the situation? What is special about my VIN.... is there anyone out there that has upgraded a 2019 Trail Boss that came with the IOS entertainment package?

what about aftermarket companies....they replace module and seen them do it, infotainment and mvi...they do it and sell it, idk the details but they advertise it

Did they actually call GM Techline to try and get the truck calibrations?  It sounds like they are just relying on the accessories catalog and saying its not compatible.  The GM Accessories catalog that the dealer uses constantly has parts removed, updated, etc. so things won't show up in there correct.  I always have to double check info on there as its always down/broken/numbers change.

Unless...GM is no longer supporting the upgrade and Techline isn't doing the upgrade.  I wish I had a truck here to test this all out on but I don't unfortunately.  I might later this week though as I had someone call about this on Saturday.

Here is the GM EPC with your VIN showing the card as compatible.  Note your IOS radio code is highlighted which indicates a matching part based on the VIN.  If you didn't have IOS radio, the card wouldn't even come up for me.

Good info newdude; I certainly now have a lot of info on my side that the average consumer would not have.

Thanks very much.... I will keep you posted!

I've checked online and no one seems to have the #84489271 conversion kit. Do you know where I might be able to get one of the few remaining kits?

Only 5 left in the US.  Best bet is https://www.bedardbroschevrolet.com/   They show 2 potentially available for sale.

    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
