What is the best thing to remove or atleast minimize scratches? I have some along the rear corner of the box and the dealer said to repaint it would be like $550

Thanks

A claybar works well to clean paint and remove some surface scratches. You could also try a product such as Meguiars' Scratch X or such. Just remember to re-wax the area afterward.

If you clay, just be sure to keep it lubricated using a detailing spray or you will end up with more scratches. Also, if the clay hits the ground, it's done.

Claying with not remove any surface scratches, claying will only remove surface contamination. For scratches and swirls you will need a product like 3M Scratch and Swirl Remover, this product can be used by hand, but will work better with a buffer. If your scratches are bad but not through the paint you may want to use a little liquid rubbing compound (use the liquid, the past is very abrasive) , and then swith to the Scratch and Swirl Remover, then finish with your favorite wax. The 3M Scratch and Swirl Remove contain mild abrasives so take your time and you will be pleased with the finsh you get.

Thanks Again for the tips. I went to another body shop and was quoted $500 to repaint the side of the box AND if I wanted to also replace the plastic wheel flair that was another $250 :shakehead:

I can't believe a few little scratches cost this much to fix.... I may see what the touchup paint will look like.

Look on Ebay for flares, you can usually pick up an entire set for $250.

Or scrapyards are an option there as well. It's not like you need a brand new one, and there has to be a million extra flares out there in the salvage yards.

How deep are the scratches? Meguauires scratch x hides light scratches nicely, but for any deep scratch there isn't much you can do to hide it aside from repainting.

You can buy some touch up paint and do a lil' wet sanding to fix it up.

There was also some product that lets you put on the touch up paint, let it set for a bit and then wipe off the excess (dunno if it actually works, just sorta popped to mind).

Another alternative for the flairs is to just spray paint them. Especially if they aren't body matched, no one will ever know the difference. On my silverado I sprayed mine w/ the spray on bedliner to give them a rougher look. Turned out really nice.

Well the body shop said they were deep enough to require repainting which meant the whole side and there are some scratches on that plastic flair too. What happened was that it rubbed against one of those d**n address signs when I was backing up and trying to look around Homer's head (my mastiff) in the back of the cab. They scratches don't scream out but if you know where to look you can easily see them....

The flairs are black as well as the truck. I'm not sure how to post a picture of it or I would to show what the damage looks like. I still can't believe they get $250 for one of them

I may try a little touch up and see what that does as atleast it will protect it from the snow that should be coming soon. I figure if I have to get the whole side painted they have to sand it anyway so that touchup wont really cause a problem.

    • Thanks for the info but wow, these are pricey! $100 apiece. A full set of smaller ones can be had for less that the cost of one of these. Gotta be a cheaper option out there but I have yet to find it. I don't want to use grommets as I can see leaking in my future. Now that I am looking at it, I might be able to just get the valve stem and modify the sensor to fit. Looks like I can just modify the hole a bit to adapt.
    • I recall paying $5.00/gallon in 2007 as well, although, different circumstances. A severe windstorm followed by a rare ice storm knocked out power in our region for days. We had a gas generator keeping the fridge cold and our furnace on power, and fuel stations either didn't have power, or didn't have gas because deliveries were delayed because of the storms. Driving around, we found one station that didn't have power but had a sandwich board set up out front. $5.00/gallon. They were hand-pumping it out of the underground tanks. I'm not sure that was legal or even advisable, but we needed it, and they had it. So we filled up. I was just out of college, just bought our house. Times were tight so $5.00 felt really outrageous. Local supermarkets couldn't keep stuff cold so they were basically giving food away. Fridge/freezer cases were literally being emptied out before the food expired. Never seen anything like it before, and until this day this event serves as the boilerplate for our winter storm prep.
    • Have you spilt anything on the console during ownership?  Water, coffee, soda, juice, etc.?   GM has been seeing contaminated console shift controls causing all sorts of issues.  Requires replacing the shift control.
    • If it's something they cannot figure out they can contact GM. They have a case open for noise in the suspension and my whistling drivers mirror they cant figure out how to fix.
    • Thing is gorgeous! Definitely been a LONG time since I've heard that sound!      I wouldn't call myself a purist, since I'll throw Wilwoods and power adders on anything. For me, that engine makes me cringe as a former shop owner remembering all I've been through with some of them. Plus I hate LS engines for their oiling system (MANY places to lose pressure from, especially on the AFM ones which I wouldn't be caught dead with), and the dowel-less front and rear covers - an engineering decision that irks me to no end! And I despise electronics with every fiber of my being.   My main reason for avoiding modern electronics is that when they fail, they typically leave you stranded. Tied for 1st place is also the fact that sometimes troubleshooting super-annoying problems can suck the life right out of you. I've wasted so many hours of my life chasing gremlins on those in all kinds of vehicles. I find carburetors and simple HEI style components much more suitable for keeping my sanity, lol. Different strokes for different folks. I probably get more hate from the younger crowd for sticking with my old school ways of thinking than you would for doing an LS swap.   When everything's working, they're certainly a ton of fun!
