Coming from a 2015 Silverado with a horrid reputation of violent steering wheel shaking at highway speeds and dash rattling.

What are the known commons issues of both the 2020 Sierras and specifically the first gen diesel for the 1500

I’ve seen a few guys have issues with their 3.0Ls going into “limp mode” due to some possible loose electrical harnessing. The accounts of these I have read have happened when towing. One guy got a swift buyback to a new truck again with the 3.0L. The other is currently working it out with his dealer and regional rep.

There’s a few threads on these issues here. Read up. ?

I saw those threads. Didn’t know if those were wide spread common issues or one offs. Thanks

I've had my 3.0 for 9 months now, 7,000 miles.  Not a single issue ( knock on wood).  Absolutely love the engine and 10 speed transmission.

I just hit 19k on mine.  Transmission cooler line popped off around 2k miles but other than that it's been smooth sailing!  I love this 3.0!

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve never had a diesel, so was it easy immediately obvious or did you drive on it for awhile before noticing something bad?

This is my first diesel as well.  It was immediately obvious.  The line dumped out most of the transmission fluid, which smelled not so great, and caused the transmission to slip really bad.  I called Onstar and they towed it to the local dealership which had it fixed by the following day.  Apparently, the line going into the cooler became disconnected at the connector/attachment to the cooler.  They said they just reconnected it, topped off the fluid, cleaned up the mess and it was good to go.

I have a 2020 3.0L Duramax with about 2500 miles. At 1500 miles a solenoid failed causing a transmission failure. It was still drivable (Limp home mode). They fixed it and it has been good so far. That said, I really love this powertrain. Lots of torque. Very smooth 10 speed transmission. Great mileage. I average 22 mpg city and 28+ highway. I really hope that was my last and only issue.

Around 3K miles on mine. No issues and tows awesome. Just keep an eye on the DEF if you tow as it can be thirsty under heavy load.

3 months / 5k on mine with about 3k towing 5000lb trailer. 0 issues (knock on wood).  I would rebuy if something happened to it.

If I were you, I wouldn't consider that option. Give it some time for that engine to build up a reputation, or get it with any of the proven V8's available.

Until you watch a 2900 mile 5.3 get towed in and drive away with a whole left bank of lifters and a new DFM solenoid...or you get three 5.3 trucks within a month that had failed oil cooler lines (one blew while driving), the ones that have been reported to blow on the highway on here a few times already.

...so much for proven...

Mine is in the shop right now with what are likely electrical/harness issues, and it looks like gm might be offering buyback. I would buy this truck again in a heartbeat. Id really like them to fix mine, or find me another one.

I have 10k miles on my truck that I bought in February.  About 3k of those miles were pulling a 5k travel trailer all around Texas, this truck is fantastic.  I wish I could have bought this truck with the 3.73 gear option, but I couldn't get those with a loaded LTZ pickup.

I am running factory height Nitto Ridge Grappler tires with Eibach/Bilstein shocks, the factory Z71 shocks and tires are terribly underwhelming.

From having owned a 2011 Duramax with the LML engine for the past 9 years I can say that problems are seledom resolved within a model year and fixes are provided with the next year's production. Many examples of this happening if you check the specific engine problems by model year.

At this point in time it would be smarter and safer to buy a 2021 model truck.
