So I had a question for the guys with a little more experience which is probably all of you. I’ve got 67,000 miles on my 2017 all-terrain X. I took it In to get the differential, transfer case, brake, transmission and pretty much everything else that should’ve been done at 45,000…

 

They called me to to ask me if I was having any problems with the shifting or shuttering because they weren’t recommending the transmission fluid flush and less I was having issues. I mean I feel like there’s issues but from reading enough posts and other reports... I think mine is probably par for the course with as many complaints as there is about the eight speed which I know they understand all that so for them to discourage me from doing the fluid change I was just trying to get a understanding in layman‘s terms of why I would avoid doing that or maybe understand why they would discourage me from doing something they recommend in the manual. I didn’t get a very good vibe from the service department salesman I’ll call him. I’m attaching our conversation about the brake pads we had. I just want to feel that I’m doing the right thing by not getting the fluid changed in the transmission.

I'd have no problems with getting all that stuff done at this mileage. If they don't want to take your money, go to another dealership that will.

 

The mileage you may be seeing in the owners manual could be stuff that should get changed under the most severe cases. I doubt you are putting 9,000lbs behind your truck everyday and beating the snot out of it all the time.

 

The front and rear diff can be done with ease on the garage floor and same with the transfer case. It's a drain and fill on the transfer case and front diff. The rear diff I just suck the fluid out and add new fluid back in.

Does this truck have a transmission dip stick? If so pull it and look at the fluid. If it doesn't look new (transparent red) change it. If it looks brown or opaque it's trouble. It doesn't have to be hot to do this. 

 

I tow or haul nothing and I doubt anyone babies there ride more than I (driving). Mine was brown by 50 K miles.

They just kept trying to tell me it was sealed and I really wouldn’t have questioned anything except when I couldn’t find the brake pad thickness and he texted me and was telling me that well I had upgraded break pads and I said did y’all do that because nobody else did...

As long as the existing fluid is not burnt, I WOULD have a transmission service done and make sure they add a good tranny additive like the BG Tranny product.  Make sure they do the transmission flush done RIGHT.  (with the right machine which allows the tranny pump to pump out the old fluid and bring in the new fluid)  Just because it's a "sealed" unit doesn't mean the fluid doesn't go bad.

Can’t really comment on the trans fluid change because i have a 6 speed tranny. As far as brake pads, I got 107,000 on my OEM pads and they still weren’t 100% wore out. The fronts and tears still had about 15% left on them. If you don’t tow or haul heavy items and are gentle on the brakes, I’d let them go. With 50% still showing, you’re good for a while in my opinion.

Yeah that seemed absolutely crazy to me too. I’m not gonna lie this is my first new vehicle experience ever and I told myself that I wanted to get a vehicle brand new and maintain it so I wasn’t buying some ****** somebody else had not taken care of. This thing has a class action lawsuit against the transmission, Every time I come in this forum because I have an issue or something that feels weird I find pages of people with the same issue… I appreciate the help everybody

I change out my transmission fluid at 10k miles. But then I switch it over to AMSOIL so that is why so early.  But if you want to keep your vehicle and as trouble free as possible then transmission fluid changes at every 45k miles is a good idea.  Considering most don't put that many miles on their ride in a short time. The cost is well worth it.  Most don't do anything to the transmission and then wonder why they are having issues when they get to 100k miles. 

 

If you want to go longer then running a full synthetic like AMSOIL will keep it going.  I had 200,000 on my 2002 and I ran the last run of AMSOIL ATF up to 100,000 miles and had a sample sent off and it came back in great shape with very little wear material.  This is even towing a 4klbs. 10' x 20' box trailer once or so a month over a two year period.

Lots of old wives tales out there still about tranny flushing.  You get a number of people who have never serviced their tranny and then decide to do a flush at 150,000 miles for the first time and then wonder why the tranny fails soon after.  But the fact is, if you service it on a regular basis it really does help.  Sadly the manufacturers are having owners manuals printed up to reflect "lifetime" fluids and "sealed/no need to service" units.  This is very very stupid on their part.

Wife's Terrain has a transmission filter but you have to take the transmission completely apart to change it?

Old iron is looking better and better.

My Avalanche has a very detailed maintenance log. At 167K when I bought it nothing was said about the transmission. I exchanged the fluid twice in two weeks. The fluid looked and smelled fine. My brother in law a Chevy only driver keeps his vehicles to 300K miles. Changes his at 60K miles. He has 3 going with over 200K.

And I guess that’s why I’m trying to understand why the dealer would suggest that it was at the dealership for the transmission flush And he called me to talk me out of doing it. He was acting like it was an cost thing, And like it was going to be so much more because of the specific transmission I am really just trying to get some feedback on it that is bullshit that’s why they didn’t want to do it or what... I never gave him an indication that paying extra for the transmission service was gonna be a problem. With how important I always assumed it was I’m just kind of caught off guard and it made me feel a certain way about going back to their service department.

    • Disassembly may be Required!   Every blender makes claims but do  you ponder those claims? What was really said? Was it true?  Motive for saying it? What does in infer?  Is that inference true?    Let's do one.    Claim: Made from shear stable base oils.    What was said: Base Oils are shear proof.   Was it true: Yes.  ALL base oils are Newtonian.    Motive / Inference: To imply the fully formulated product is Shear Proof.    Is the Inference true?: Most fully formulated multigrade oils contain Viscosity Modifiers or VM's, sometimes called VII or Viscosity Index Improvers. There are four types. One is in fact shear proof but it also has a bad effect on extreme cold flow and is restricted to use in specialty oils. A second has limited shear called a 0-5 SSI polymer. Meaning its shear is limited to a range of zero to five percent as reported by the ASTM D6278 Shear Stability Index test. A few high end oils, like Torco SR-5, use them and brag about it profusely. Actually all that use it point it out. The last two shear dramatically and are often marketed as a 'feature' of the product aiding the oil to meet fuel standard requirements of ever stricter rules. One shears more than 5% and the other up to 20%. As you make guess, cost is directly linked to shear down and as such the majority of oils use the cheapest organic polymers sold to make grade and pass stringent tests.    PPD's or Pour Point Depressants also shear a bit, only a few percent and hide inside the 0-5 SSI capabilities.    The blender knows he can not out engineer Stribeck. Physics is not a suggestion. But he can wordcraft the unsuspecting toward believing a false claims INFERENCE. This is LEGAL. It is COMMON, and it is EFFECTIVE.         
    • I don't recall ever dealing with one on an '06 and back. It may not even exist on that. I can't remember for sure.   Any kind of ice in or after the evaporator is normally due to low charge with both a clutch-cycling orifice tube system, and a TXV system.
    • Engines wear. It is unavoidable. So the question isn't if it will wear out but rather WHEN it will wear out. That question is about rate and RATE is a HUGE problem for almost everyone; but not in the way we may think.    Unless there is something drastically wrong with your powertrain, wear is exceedingly slow. It doesn't wear out in minutes or hours or days or months but in years or even decades. Ditto sludge and varnish. Humans are an impatient lot so to see the benefit of a truly superior product you may have to wait a very long time. Most will get bored first and trade before they reap the benefit.   Humans are not companionate creatures when it comes to those we do not know. We don't care what happens to the second or third owner as long as it doesn't happen to us or someone we know and actually like.   Sad commentary on humans but it is what it is. That thus, then, there is no advantage...to or for you if the above paragraphs adequately describe you.    BUT if you are a buy and hold type and patient enough to reap the rewards of your labors then that thing that is happening that you haven't yet seen, but will; can be abated by such products. Seals harden and leak with time and lots of it. Rings stick after thousands of miles of a slowly building plaque of varnish.    Then there is this. This didn't happen over night and this poor fellow knew when he removed the cover and not one second before.   Not "aware' isn't the same thing as "isn't happening".        The above was typical of the Ford 361 and 391 bus motors on Bulk Pennzoil Mineral Oil products on 3K mile OCI's at about 60K miles back in the 60's and 70's at the Anamosa School District when my Uncle took over their maintenance program.    This is Pepper at @ 165K on 5K OCI's using Group IV/V Full Synthetics.      HM oils will help the first but not the second.    Then again if one used..... ah, ya know.....
