I'm currently towing a 6,000 lb travel trailer with a 6.2L Yukon Denali.  While it tows OK, I am interested in the 3.0 Duramax's peak torque at a low rpm.  For those of you towing with one, how does it pull on significant hills?  I pull at 60 mph and on significant grades the 6.2 will downshift an pull at 3,000 rpm on those hills.  Does the torque of the 3.0 allow you to comfortably pull hills without multiple downshifts?

I’m pulling about the same weight as you, maybe a few hundred pounds less. I’m extremely impressed with this engine and transmission. Pulling through mountains is no problem at all. Consistent smooth power when I need it. For a half-ton I can’t expect any better.

I pulled a friends 26' Heartland-Mallard (6,000-7,000lbs not sure) a few hundred miles, had some decent grades to pull up, 55-60mph flooring it. I am totally satisfied with the torque of the 3.0 vs my previous 5.7 HEMI. Although the 3.0 loaded will not win any drag races nor will it pass many big rigs when climbing. The payoff is the 10-speed shifts smooth and smart, so when it shifts (it shifts alot, always trying to find the good torque) you barely feel it and with the low rpm power make the whole experience drama-free. If you want fast and uphill then go with an HD and the big DMAX.

I have a 23ft Jayco 4550lbs dry so 5500 with our gear probably? Took it to the mountains in Alberta this year 6 hours each way, did good, on the steep grades at 115km/h it for sure did downshift and ran over 3000rpm. You can’t really hear the motor towing on level ground at about 2000RPM but when it downshifts on grades and is over 3000 you can hear the turbo sucking air but it did a good job in my opinion. Always had gas jobs that were struggling on level ground and really struggling in hills, no more screaming 5000 rpm on hills like a gas job

I've put about 2400 miles of towing my 5k travel trailer all around Texas this year.  I just set the cruise at 65 and let that sweet 10 speed and turbo do the work.  Love my Dmax Jr
