I have a 2021 GMC 1500 AT4 pickup. I installed the GM outside keypad to unlock and lock my doors so I can leave the fob inside (I was a Ford owner and liked that feature). The truck has no problem locking the fob in the truck when I lock the doors using the keypad. What I can't figure out is, how to remote start the truck from my OnStar app with the remote locked in the vehicle. Is there a setting I can turn off? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Im going to go out on a limb and say this is something that'll need to be programmed out by someone who can access the vehicle's programming.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's a coded software(safety type feature) not a simple on/off switch in the truck or app. If the truck detects the key in the cab it assumes your there and can just press the start button. I know when I first got my truck I forgot the extra fob inside it and would try remote starting it with the other fob I was using and the truck wouldn't start with the fob itself.

Seems like you folks already have it sorted out.

For confirmation, this is from 2021 Sierra OM:

The vehicle cannot be remote started if:
. The RKE transmitter is inside the vehicle or if the key is in the ignition.
. The hood is not closed.
. There is an emission control system malfunction and the lamp is on.
. The ignition is in any mode other than off.
. The hazard warning flashers are on.
. Two remote starts or a remote start with an extension have been used.
. The vehicle is not in P (Park).

The engine will turn off during a remote vehicle start if:
. The coolant temperature gets too high.
. The oil pressure gets low.

The RKE transmitter range may be reduced while the vehicle is running.

Faraday pouch... store it inside the pouch, the truck won't know the FOB is there until you remove it from the pouch.

One example. there are others available.

I understand the concept of this. But isn't that just more work? You remote start the truck from where ever you are, then you either need to unlock the truck right away and leaving it unlocked as its warming/cooling or hit the unlock button before you walk out the door or keep the fob on you so door unlocks when you get to it. But if you keep the fob on you then the fob that's kept in the truck is useless at that point.

Not sure his situation/scenario he wants to use this setup for but either way just seems like extra steps. I know I wouldn't leave my truck running unlocked especially if there is a key fob in the truck that just had to be pulled out of a pouch. And I understand you can "hide" the pouch in the truck. But then there's another step you have to do once inside the vehicle just to get going.

Go back and read from the beginning. You're not understanding what the want and need is.

I appreciate all of the input but it just seems like if GM is going to offer an outside keypad to be installed on the truck then there should be a way for everything to still function. The whole point of the keypad is so I don’t have to carry my key fob with me. Ford uses the same kind of push button start technology and I was able to remote start it with my OnStar app and the fob locked in the vehicle. I just hope there is some way around this.

I know they make a pouch that I can put the fob into but then that just seems like a lot of work when I get in and get out. Take the fob out to start the truck and then put the fob in the pouch before I get out. There has to be a programming feature that can be changed.

Ford doesn’t have OnStar. It’s a GM product. Leaving your key fob in the truck as a regular habit is pretty silly. If you’re hunting/hiking/drove somewhere for a run, I could understand it. To do it because you can’t be troubled with carrying a 1.5” x 2” key fob is asking to have your truck stolen.
