3800 was a unit for sure.  A gen 4 version that was all aluminum with DI, VVT and a 6 speed automatic would have brought it to a sweet spot.

I don’t follow Cadillac too much anymore but I was surprised to see they are using the L3B in the CT4-V. Uptuned a fair amount to 325hp and 380tq. If GM brings those numbers to the T1’s 2.7, it would actually be comparable to the Ford 2.7.

For now it seems to be the 8 and 10, based on the video -- which claimed to be showing info slides from a GM presentation.

I had some suspicion that the 4.3 was done at some point with the way they've been promoting the 2.7T as being more powerful and fuel efficient over it.
 
4.3 would have benefited from the 8 speed like in the Express/Savana.  They drive nice with the 8 over the 6.  Shame they aren't keeping it and doing that.  
 
I'm less worried about the 8 speed than the 6 speed which sounds insane but at work, for every 20-30 6L80 we do physical repairs on, we do 1 8L90.  Plenty of 8 speed fluid swaps though.  
 
It would be nice to see the 3.0 diesel trickle down to the Custom and WT trims to fill the engine gap. 
 
Also they need to offer a freaking power driver seat on WT and Custom other than optioning the 2.7T which gets you it.  
 
Oooh!  Look at that chart in the video about 1:35.  The Custom Trail Boss gets the 2.7T as the base engine.  No 5.3 either?  Just 2.7T and 6.2.  
 
 
Curious to if the 5.3 is gone for good on the TB custom or just didnt get mentioned. I would think the 2.7 is base motor with the 5.3 and 6.2 as options.

After what I just witnessed with my neighbor, the 6-speed need to be gone. He bought a 2021 Custom TB. 1100 miles and the trans is toast. He hasn't even made his first payment. Towed his toy hauler once. That was it. He said his toy hauler weighs 5900 lbs unloaded. It is very short. He's only putting small electric motorcycles and 1 or 2 small gas powered bikes in the trailer, along with the typical fluids, foods, etc. His oldest kid is about 12. The people in the family are small and light. I don't see him overloading the truck in payload, tongue, towing, etc. He replaced a 2004 Suburban 2500 with the new Silverado. I feel bad for the guy.

 

I was burned by GM on the 5.3 with AFM back in 2012. It was in a 2007 Tahoe. 6 months out of warranty, but not out of warranty on mileage. Driving home to Chicago after attending a funeral in Salt Lake City. Got off the freeway in Laramie, WY to fill the gas tank and my families stomachs. Get back on the freeway, at cruise control, start climbing a canyon and the bottom of the engine fails. Needed a new engine. It was going to take at least a week, but my wife was active duty Navy and her command wouldn't grant an extension even though she had the leave time available. GM wasn't going to cover the engine, nor any part of it, and certainly wasn't going to help in any way. We were a young family with a 2 year old kid. I ended up downgrading to a Malibu just to get home. Had to pick and choose which items in the Tahoe went into the dealership's dumpster and what continued on the trip with us. Didn't have the time to ship anything because we had to get back on the road immediately, and everything was closed by the time we finished the paperwork on the Malibu. We lost some valuable family heirlooms because of this. It soured me on GM for several years. I avoided anything with cylinder deactivation until DFM came about. I'm only giving it a chance because of the changes in the technology/mechanicals.

 

With all that said, the 6-speeds days were numbered when GM decided to put the 8-speed in the Colorado/Canyon. My guess/shot in the dark is that the Custom Trail Boss will still have the 5.3 as an option. It'll just be the 5.3 with DFM and an 8-speed. Therefore, there won't be much differentiating the Custom Trail Boss from the Trail Boss LT. I think the Trail Boss LT will then follow in the GMC AT4's footsteps and have the 3.0 Duramax as an iron in 2022+.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
