I have decided after much reading that I am going to try a j pipe on my exhaust before my next road trip with the camper.

Flowmaster FX catback, sounds great except for a drone under load in the 1800-2000 range.

I have a shop that is going to look at it with me on Wednesday.

When doing the calculation I get basically 28-25 inches respectively.

My question is do you build for the longer length and it covers the whole range?

I did a TON of research on this years ago fighting drone on my Mustang. Then again with my dad's SRT8 Charger.

What we found was its best to make it adjustable because what works in theory plays out different in reality. Also, we found it most effective when the j pipe was the same diameter as the main pipe.

One more thing, make it tee off 90 degrees for a good amount before turning it.

Good luck! You likely find that it makes it overall quieter and cleaner sounding. It did in both cases for me. Lost that snarl and rasp. Not always a bad thing.

Thanks, not really sure how to make it adjustable easily.

I could always make it 30 and cover a broader RPM range I suppuse.

Funny enough I took off the huge tip that came with this system and it actually helped so I have to believe that anything will help at this point.

If you are doing this for a performance enhancement, then the Flowmaster muffler is not the best choice, you want a "Pass Thru" open muffler for better Bang for your buck, but if you are only looking for the "Sound" then your good!

Flowmaster FX is a pass through muffler.

I am not doing this for performance (the exhaust is already done)

I am trying to eliminate the drone on the installed Flowmaster FX cat back

Sorry for not responding! Check out the way Solo does it,...

could do that I suppose and just clamp it into position right?

Yep! A lap joint clamp should work like this:

I am going to do this out of 409 SS just like the rest of my exhaust (gotta love the rust belt)

Will SS stretch like that to make the slip joint?

Having this done next Friday and hopefully making it adjustable.

Exhaust shop had never seen this but understood what I wanted done.

Will get some pics and let you know how it sounds

I think solo exhaust kits are SS and 409 is a low grade of SS, so it should be fine?

Got this done Friday and am very pleased with the results.

I didn't get pics but you guys know what they look like 😉

He did make it adjustable, it will go from about 25 to about 29.

It is set at max right now and sounds so much better.

The test will come up in a couple weeks with the camper.

I have the Solo exhaust on my truck. Its pretty mellow even with their loudest version. I removed the extendable portion of the J-pipe just to get a bit more db out of it. No drone. at all. Glad you got yours worked out. Drone sure can give a headache.

    • Still looks like a rivet to me in the pics, I don't see a nut and none of the pics show the head of the screw. But if you says so.....
    • Thanks for all the help so far!   I did try right from 2026 right down to 2021, and only from 2023 down lets me select the option for tire psi change, but I get the vehicle not supported error!   I'll definitely try it under Chevrolet after work today, and I'll get the sensor number from gm for my truck tire sensors. And I'll let you know if it works for me under Chevrolet!   And if that doesn't work, I'm going to guess that what @Atlas said about maybe I have a different body control module could be true!
    • From where I'm sitting this sounds like a compatibility problem. I'm assuming the 2007 was a 900-series truck, and not an 800-series (they were sold side-by-side in dealerships that model year), since it starts and runs.   This is why I HATE post-2006 vehicles. Everything becomes a huge problem when you try to keep the thing running for longer than the manufacturer has designed it to.    I can't remember when Global-A architecture started - either '10 or '11. For your sake, you had better hope it's '11, or you're going to be spending some BIG money to correct this cluster-eff. That's something you need to find out before doing anything else. You may have several computers bricked ... but the fact that it runs tells me you MIGHT be ok here.     EDIT: Just did a quick refresher. You're screwed. This is Global-A. The 2 systems are NOT compatible in the slightest. Once you get the correct engine in there that IS compatible, you're going to need to see how many computers are locked. Absolute NIGHTMARE to straighten out, too. Your buddy might be better off cutting his losses and finding something else.   Welcome to post-2006 vehicle electronics. This is why I quit the industry, and drive nothing built after 1994. This stuff takes all the fun out of wrenching!

    • True, hard to say what differences there may or may not be between Chev and GM as well as a production year or mid year part change either.    I just found it odd that under the Sierra choice on the Autel that many of the last few years of production year did not include the choice of changing the tire pressure but if that is an Autel thing or a GM thing as to why the choices were not there. Knowing what tpms sensors are on the truck should give some guidance into which choices on the tool even make sense to try as I wouldn't give up just yet with the tool but I guess he will see what if anything he comes up with if he finds out a bit more info and tries a few more things on the Autel.
