The big difference between a 2021 2wd LT and a 2021 Trail Boss is the length of the Cv axel, right? 

 

I should be able to install Trail Boss shocks, springs, and UCAs with no issue on my 2wd LT, right? 

 

Also once doing that upgrade I would be looking at the Ready Lift 1.75 level kit made for the Trail Boss, not the LT anymore, right?

Living in California, I still don't understanding lifting a 2x4 to look like a 4x4 but that just my opinion.  I'm sure all of your questions will be answered.

I'm not going rock crawling or anything too wild but need to be able to get out on some property from time to time. Why pay 55 for a truck when I can get what I need for 43?

Why add a factory suspension to immediately mod it?  You'd likely kill the warranty anyway.  Just my 2 pennies, but I would likely just get a lift kit that does exactly what you want to start

You can do the factory suspension lift, but since you would be tossing the extended CV's you would in effect be spending over a grand for 4 shocks, which is absolutely silly.  Purchase the adjustable Bilsteins, Eibachs, or any other brand shock that is superior to the factory offerings and save $500.

 

PS.  I understand wanting to lift a 2wd a tad, they look a ton better with a little added height.  However, know that your ground clearance will change minimally.  If you are looking for ground clearance, your gonna need to increase your tire diameter.

I haven't looked as I don't have a need to but Bell or another by now or soon will have lift and/or drop knuckles. I do have a set on my 2015 2WD. Suspension changes are two ends of a crap covered stick. When you change one thing, you change a bunch of others you didn't intend too but can't avoid. 

 

For example when you lift or lower with preload all four A arms change angles and the intersections of these angles which changes things like scrub radius, roll, static and instant center. Preload. Rebound and compression ranges. Bump stop limits. CV axle angles for FWD. Knuckles keep most things as GM intended and engineered. 

 

Just say 'n. Think it all the way through. What will it change and how do I compensate for that change and will that compensation change something else and...and....

 

The puzzle can be solved 😉

I guess to clarify a guy locally put a bds kit on his trail boss with 400mi and is selling all his stock parts for $100. Figured that would be easier and cheaper than any other lift I was looking at. Also as noted the lift is mainly for tires and ground clearance. Lots of cactus and Mesquite on the property.

Gotcha.  Again though, being a 2WD truck that you will be taking in the fields and what-not, your most valuable clearance will be the clearance between the rear axle and the ground.  With that being known, no amount if lift will increase that rear axle clearance.  If your truly doing this for clearance reasons, skip the lift and go for larger diameter tires since that is the only way to increase your rear axle clearances and keep you from bottoming out the rear axle in ruts or mud and high centering you.

I don't understand people who buy a 4wd and never use it (which is most down south) just to say they have it. Much rather someone make their 2wd look like a 4wd knowing they are never going to need it than some box checker wanting 4wd for the discussion aspect as their kids soccer games and never using it; all that means is there is one less 4wd out there for those that actually need and use it to choose from.

So, you think you only need 4WD for snow? You never been in the gumbo down south. I remember growing up in NJ. During deer season. The way they did it was they would line up and drive the deer to the road by foot and shoot. In Texas they actually have stands in the woods. There’s lots of hunting camps and leases. I know I did lots of clearing on ROWs and hunting camps. Generalization about why just shows lack of knowledge about the subject. I can easily get through snow in a Subaru. Mud not so much.

So.  If you were shopping new (which you aren't hence your killer price for the stock parts) GM DOES sell BOTH a 2WD and 4WD version of the Trail Boss suspension upgrade kit.  The only difference being the 4x4 kit comes with new CV axles. 

 

Chances are the takeoff parts will fit, however...What is the exact configuration of your LT?  Extended, crew, 2.7, 4.3, 5.3, 3.0 diesel, 6.2?

That said.  You will need the following parts to make all of those takeoff Trail Boss parts work:

 

- 4 new U bolts.  GM U-bolts are 1 time use.  11602109 is the # for the Trail Boss U-bolts.

 

- Because you have an LT, you will NEED new rear leaf springs.  The Trail Boss rear parts DO NOT work with the LT's composite leaf springs which are found on 5.3 powered LT trim level trucks (aka your truck).  The Trail Boss steel spring replacement kit is 84768245.

He's actually keeping the rear blocks so could I just buy a rear lift for an LT and it would all stay kosher or do I 100% need rear steel leafs? I think I had read on another thread wither it was stock or blocked the rear leaf's should incur much of a difference if any at all, its roughly the same amount of connective area?

Honestly I wish I could provide more insight as to why that is.  

 

I'm just going by the installation instructions from the GM Service Manuals for the Trail Boss kits.

The theories in the first post in that thread you linked seem the most plausible.  Sadly, only GM seems to know why this is.  

 

I do know that the LT 5.3 got the composite springs for weight reduction on their volume 5.3 trim level.  Other engines on the LT and then loads of other trims don't use the composites at all, they are all steel springs.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
