So I just bought a 2015 chevy silverado Lt double cad z71 3 days ago from a dealer. It has a 116k miles on it. I'm looking to get rid of the afm on it. But I figured since I'm going to be in there anyways may as well go ahead and put in the cam I want. I'm look at the texas speed afm delete kit with a stage 2 maybe stage 3 cam and all the supporting mods. What I'm wanting to figure out is how bad is my gas mileage going to be affected by doing this. And roughly the power gains I could expect to see from doing this. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated

You need to stay smaller on the camshaft size if you still want good fuel mileage and for it to drive good all around. Larger camshaft need an aftermarket stall converter to make it work better and those will reduce fuel mileage around town a decent amount.

 

If you don't drive 80-90+ mph on the freeway, your fuel mileage should stay roughly the same.

 

Power gains are tough to say because of so many variables. Where you live, weather, fuel used, the dyno it's ran on, who tunes it etc etc. But probably a 40-50hp increase with a mild camshaft should be within in reason.


Also remember that you have a stock driveshaft, be careful going above 100mph on the street and the dyno. Bad things could happen at high speeds.

The texas speed stage 2 cam works on the stock converter if I go stage 3 i will have to swap it out. I live in the florida panhandle about 20 mins from pensacola and john at Triple X Motorsports will be doing the tune for me. Everyone local says he is by far the best Ls tuner around here. I'll most likely have a aftermarket drive shaft befor I get this done, thanks for mentioning it because that completely slipped my mind

LT (Gen 5 direct injection) stuff is quite a bit more complex than LS. For example, locally here in San Antonio, Nelson was once highly regarded as being a great tuner. That's not the general consensus on the newer stuff.

I had a 3500 stall, with a strong lockup clutch, in my old setup and I had two different torque converter strategies. Normal driving I kept it locked most of the time and then I'd click tow/haul and the converter stayed unlocked pretty much full time under 4000 rpm. Best of both worlds. 

 

A good converter and a good lockup schedule will make even the stock cam drive nicer so I wouldn't even consider a cam without one.
